About the Further Education Trust for Leadership The Further Education Trust for Leadership is an independent think tank established to strengthen and develop the leadership of thinking from, in and about the further education system. All our work is located in at least one of two domains: the leader in the system, by which we mean the place of leaders and leadership in the wider educational ecology; and the system in the leader, our shorthand for how the values of leaders, their culture, beliefs, ideas, character and disposition influence their own thinking and approaches in performing their role. Policy Connect Policy Connect is the organising partner for FETL’s symposium. We are a cross-party think tank improving people’s lives by influencing policy. We collaborate with Government and Parliament, through our APPGs, and across the public, private and third sectors to develop our policy ideas. We work in health; education & skills; industry, technology & innovation, and sustainability policy. Description

FETL Summer Symposium

"The future is already here – it's just not evenly distributed" - William Gibson, 2003

The impact of technology on the further education (FE) sector has been a recurring theme in all FETL research publications, with contributions from Sir Michael Barber, Bob Harrison, and Paul McKean discussing the implications of AI and digital skills gaps in the sector directly.

This next FETL Symposium, held in Parliament, will focus on the emerging role of technology in FE and its potential to transform every aspect of teaching, learning and the education environment.

In line with the Government’s EdTech Strategy, this event will explore the impact of technology on teaching and highlight some of the latest innovations that are being employed in the classroom and workshop to enhance learning. Specifically, the event will involve learners and a live demonstration of how virtual and mixed reality can provide a more hands-on educational experience.

The symposium discussion will address the challenges, efficacy and ethics of moving towards a more technology centred FE sector. Our chair and confirmed speakers include:

  • Lord Holmes, Chair of the EdTech Leadership Group and the APPG for Assistive Technology

  • Deborah Millar, Group Director of Digital Learning Technology, Grimsby Institute of Further and Higher Education

  • Paul McKean, Head of Further Education and Skills, Jisc

  • Dick Palmer, former Chief Executive TEN Group and adviser on FELTAG

  • Maren Deepwell, Chief Executive, Association for Learning Technology (ALT)
