Crossing genre and defying convention, we develop, produce and promote innovative music – supporting emerging artists and bringing new music to new audiences.Founded in 2004 by composer Gabriel Prokofiev, nonclassical began as a clubnight focused on presenting new music in non-traditional performance spaces. We have since presented events across the UK and worldwide, and our record label is home to artists including Tansy Davies, Aïsha Orazbayeva, Gabriel Prokofiev, Langham Research Centre, Tom Richards and many more.nonclassical is based in London and led by Executive Director Eleanor Ward with a small, but perfectly formed team.

We all contribute to and experience the soundscape. Yet it is not something we often pay close attention to.

The Chapel

Aimed at budding and experienced field recordists, podcasters and anyone interested in sound, composer Kate Carr offers an introduction to recording and composing with our soundscape, as well as focusing on how we can unlock hidden layers of sound.Participants will be introduced to specialised mics aimed at recording vibrations, electricity and underwater as well as other, more conventional techniques. The workshop will commence with a discussion and an introduction to the equipment before we head outside to record the sounds around Bethnal Green. Later, there will be time to discuss the difference between our sonic and visual experiences of space, the soundscape as a field of connection, and how to use sound to convey and explore place and acts of place making.If you own one, please bring with you a handheld recording device, as well as some headphones and, optionally, an SD card. There will be a limited number of recording devices available on the day. The Chapel is situated on the third floor of the building, but there&#x27;ll be stewards to help you find it if you get lost. When you enter the building (the entrance of which is a cafe), head through the double doors on your left and take the lift up to the top floor. The Chapel is through some double doors on your right.Kate CarrKate Carr has been investigating the intersections between sound, place, and emotionality both as an artist and a curator since 2010. During this time she has ventured from tiny fishing villages in northern Iceland, explored the flooded banks of the Seine in a nuclear power plant town, recorded wildlife in South Africa, and in the wetlands of southern Mexico.Her work has been featured in The New York Times, The Wire, Pitchfork, Fact Magazine, The Quietus, and The Guardian. It has also been played on the radio on stations ranging from various channels of the BBC, to independent stations in Estonia. Her music can be found on the labels Helen Scarsdale (US), Rivertones (UK), Soft (France) 3Leaves (Hungary) Galaverna (Italy) as well as on her own label Flaming Pines.She has also performed live throughout the UK and Europe.Carr is Australian, and lives in London.Nonclassical is grateful for the support from Arts Council, England for this project.
