FAQs

What qualification will I receive?

You will receive a qualification in First Aid at Work, that is aligned to HSE requirements. Your certificate is valid for 3 years and is nationally recognised by employers across all industries.

What does the assessment involve?

Assessment is through continuous observation by your instructor throughout the 3 days, plus a short multiple-choice questionnaire. There are no written exams. Your instructor will support you throughout and ensure you feel confident in your abilities.

How long is the course?

The course runs over 3 consecutive days, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM each day, with regular breaks and a break for lunch. This is the minimum duration required by the HSE for the full First Aid at Work qualification.

What is the difference between FAW and EFAW?

The Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) is a 1-day course covering essential life-saving skills suitable for lower-risk workplaces. The full First Aid at Work (FAW) is a 3-day course that covers everything in EFAW plus additional topics including fractures, spinal injuries, medical emergencies, poisoning, and more - making it suitable for higher-risk and larger workplaces.

How do I renew my certificate?

Your certificate is valid for 3 years. To renew, you can take a 2-day First Aid at Work Requalification course before your certificate expires. The HSE also recommends annual refresher training to maintain your competence, though this does not extend your certificate validity.

Is there an age requirement?

You must be at least 14 years old to attend the course. However, to be formally appointed as a workplace first aider, you must be at least 16 years old. There is no upper age limit.

How many first aiders does my workplace need?

This depends on your workplace risk level and number of employees. As a guide, the HSE recommends at least 1 first aider per 50 employees in low-hazard environments, and 1 per 25 employees in higher-hazard workplaces. We can help you assess your specific requirements.

What topics are covered?

The course covers a comprehensive range of topics across 3 days including: CPR and AED usage, recovery position, choking, bleeding control, shock, burns, fractures, spinal injuries, head injuries, heart attacks, strokes, asthma, diabetes, anaphylaxis, poisoning, eye injuries, and more.

Do I need prior first aid experience?

No prior experience is needed. This course is designed for complete beginners as well as those renewing their qualification. Our experienced instructors will guide you through everything step by step, with plenty of hands-on practice in a supportive environment.

What should I wear to the course?

We recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing as there will be practical elements including kneeling on the floor for CPR practice. Trainers or flat, comfortable shoes are advisable. We provide all training equipment and materials.
