First Robson Bridge Evening

Bridge in Oxfordis the go to destination for anyone wishing to learn and play bridge the Andrew Robson way. It was set up in 2018 by Jonathan Davis, a longstanding friend and bridge expert colleague of Andrew Robson, England's number 1 player/teacher of bridge. We offer teaching and weekly supervised play sessions throughout the year, aimed mainly at the social player.  All 11 of Andrew Robson's famous bridge courses are taught at some stage throughout the year. and Jonathan also offers a weekly refresher course and private lessons on demand. Every Tuesday morning in normal times we hold a friendly bridge session at Wytham Village Hall, overlooking the cricket ground in a lovely unspoilt village just outside Oxford.  More detals can be found on our website www.arb-oxf.uk. Whether you are interested solely in playing bridge for fun, or have ambitions to become a leading tournament player, there will be a course that is right for you. Bridge in Oxford: learn and play the Andrew Robson way

We are delighted to announce  the first of what we hope will become a regular evening diary date for Andrew Robson bridge fans in and around Oxford. This is an opportunity to come along, play bridge in a friendly atmosphere, meet new people and learn more about the game, all at the same time.
The date for this first "evening of Chicago" is September 5th 2018, kicking off at 6.45pm in Portobello's Restaurant in South Parade, Summertown. The evening will consist of a number of different elements. It includes a short opening seminar, two hours plus of supervised play with 16 to 24 pre-dealt hands, a break for refreshments followed by more play and a Q and A/review session at which I will discuss all the hands you have played.
Don't worry if you are confused by the reference to Chicago - it is really just a different way of scoring that speeds up the game and makes it more exciting, as well as lending itself more readily to teaching.  All will be explained on the evening; if you have played rubber bridge before, you will have no trouble picking up what is involved. The bidding and play is exactly as in ordinary bridge.
I am afraid that I don't think this evening is suitable for complete beginners, but anyone else, if they are already familiar with the basics of the game, looking to learn, or have been on a Robson course already, is welcome - the more, the merrier. Space means that we will be limited to a maximum of 10 tables so early booking is advised. If you don't have a partner, we will do what we can to match you up wth someone like-minded, but only those who have booked in advance can be admitted. Refreshments will be available. 
Most importantly of all, I hope you will feel encouraged to come and see what a friendly, civilised evening of bridge should be like - that is what the Andrew Robson Bridge Club in London is famous for. If you are competitive-minded, you will be able to check your score against a par score for the hands that I will have worked out in advance. But if you simply want to come along and play with some like-minded people for the fun of the game, and take away hand records and notes about the hands afterwards, that is fine too.

 Where: Upstairs at Portabello’s Grill, South Parade, Summertown
Timings (approximate):
6.45       Arrive and you will be allocated to a table (equivalent standard, where possible)
7.00       Short seminar on a special topic (weak 2s) by Jonathan Davis
7.20       Supervised play session starts – 8 boards of Chicago (pre-dealt hands)
8.30       Review of hands played in first session. Break for refreshments.
9.00       Second play session – minimum of 8 more boards of Chicago (pre-dealt hands)
10.15   Review of hands played in second session 
10.30   Depart – play can continue to 11pm if there is sufficient demand
Cost: £20 for early bird bookings, later purchases £22 per player, includes tuition, hand records, score cards and free glass of wine.
