First Thursday Performance Evening

Bow Arts is an arts education charity that provides affordable creative workspaces for over 500 emerging artists. Alongside this, Bow Arts manages one of the country's most exciting education programmes, which takes world-class artists into 90 schools to improve the lives and learning of children and young people. Bow Arts runs the Nunnery Gallery, a public gallery that supports a diverse range of high-quality exhibitions and events as well as the delivery of a public arts programme. Established in 1995, Bow Arts holds an important place in east London which is fast becoming known as London’s Artist Quarter.

For November First Thursday, the Nunnery welcomes two new performances from artists Marcus Orlandi and Rosie Gibbens.

For November First Thursday, the Nunnery welcomes two performances from artists Marcus Orlandi and Rosie Gibbens. Following on from the Bow Open exhibition’s theme of “our current political moment”, the performances will centre around the idea of failure, using both humour and our preconceptions to probe this notion. Ones to watch on London’s performance art circuit, don’t miss these two new pieces from Marcus and Rosie. Doors from 6pm, performances will begin at 7pm.Through performances, videos and sculptures, Rosie uses absurdity to question socially constructed rules about how to behave as woman, worker and consumer. She often approaches the work as perverse product demonstrations where the terms ‘sex sells’ is taken to an illogical conclusion and everyday objects are humorously re-purposed. She hopes to skew the ways in which bodies are conventionally consumed through visuals which are simultaneously silly and serious.Rosie (b.1993, UK) graduated from the Royal College of Art (2018) with a Masters in Contemporary Art Practice. Recent presentations of her work include ‘Carrot and Stick’ (2019) for Art Night at Chalton Gallery and ‘Attack of the 50 Foot Woman’ (2019) for Recreation Grounds V curated by DATEAGLE ART. She has also been exhibited in Bow Arts’ ‘Visions at the Nunnery’ (2018, UK), out_sights gallery’s ‘Learn Where the Meat Comes (2018, South Korea) and performed for Revolve Performance Art Festival (2018, Sweden).Marcus graduated from Middlesex University with a First Class BA (hons) in Fine Arts (2008). Recent commissions include Mothertongue, Oriel Wrexham (2018), Ctrl Alt, Del, The Working Artist: East London Group, Bow Arts (2017) and The Duet, Birkbeck Symposium, Camden Peoples Theatre (2017). Recent performances include: Hard Working Class, SET, London, Ye Old Git, Milton Keynes Art Centre and London Art Fair, London (2019); The Junkie, Newcomers, Theatre 503, London; The Scarecrow, Unperforming, Artsadmin, London; Iron Man, Visions in the Nunnery, Nunnery Gallery, London (2018). Marcus is part of the 2019 Bow Open Show with his work Man Sandwich.
