Five 'Survive' Lockdown: Continuing the Conversation - Career Progression

A facilitated online discussion about the impact and longer-term implications of the COVID-19 pandemic for women in UK higher education.

Following the publication of the graphic novella Five 'Survive' Lockdown, which tracks the lives of five fictional female academics at a fictional UK university, the academic/artist/author Dr Kate Carruthers Thomas (Birmingham City University, UK)will host a series of ‘continuing conversations’ for academics and professional services staff in higher education, addressing issues and questions inspired by the novella’s subject matter and individual characters’ stories.The first of these online, facilitated discussions focuses on <h3>COVID-19 and career progression in higher education</h3>At the start of Five 'Survive' Lockdown, Professor Brigid McNiff is at a career highpoint. A book launch and a visiting professorship overseas are imminent. The latter is postponed due to COVID-19 and the book launch isn’t quite what she hoped. Then grief stops her in her tracks. Meanwhile, her colleague Dr Kim Campbell-Bailey secures a major grant, but Dr Jess Wells’ fixed-term contract is terminated and she is offered only hourly paid work for the forthcoming academic year.This discussion turns from fiction to the real lives of female academics. We'll consider: <ul><li>the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on career progression</li><li>how individual circumstances advantaged some and disadvantaged others</li><li>the implications for the next promotion round, the next REF – and beyond </li><li>the role of universities in mitigating impacts and supporting progression.</li></ul>This event will be hosted on MS Teams, is free to access and open to all. The session will be recorded and notes made available to attendees. Pre-reading of the graphic novella Five 'Survive' Lockdown is not obligatory but is obviously highly recommended!
