Join us for a personal tour with FIX artists Alicia Bruce, Yvonne De Rosa, Elaine Duigenan, Jess Fairbrother and Christian Nilson speaking about their work before a panel discussion and Q&A on the 4th floor of the Bargehouse. Please arrive with your ticket on the ground floor – the Sambrooks Brewery pop-up bar will be open if you wish to buy refreshments beforehand. Please arrive with time to spare.
Scottish artist Alicia Bruce will speak about her experiences when making ‘Menie TRUMPED’, a exploring the Menie Estate residents’ protested against Donald Trump’s planned golf course, which now is finished and heavily monitored even on the public pathways which intersect it.
Premiering Yvonne De Rosa’s latest work ‘Albania Available For Rent’ took her to the same places pictured in found photographs taken after the Italian-German military occupation of and subsequent independence in the country. These images coupled with De Rosa’s responses as an Italian open a dialogue with history past, present and future.
Elaine Duigenan will discuss her practice of the extraordinary use of twist ties to recreate some of the iconic photographs of plant structures by the German artist Karl Blossfeldt. Her series ‘Blossfeldt’s Apprentice’ truly shows her embracing of the ‘object’ in photography literally and metaphorically.
Award winning artist Jessa Fairbrother explores the familiar and the personal, where yearning and performance meet each other in photography. Discussing her work exploring the relationship she had with her mother, and her own inability to become one. Fairbrother’s pieces are sculptural and pierced with pins and embroidery, hers is a photographic performance of being cut from the role of daughter while at the same time denied a maternal role to shape her future.
Swedish photographer Christian Nilson will discuss his acclaimed series, ‘The Swiss’and his perspective as an immigrant in Switzerland to a wide variety of subjects that show his love of his adopted country in all its conflicted complexity—the traditional and the innovative, the spectacular, the humorous and the mundane. Copies of his book Limited Edition book will also be available for signing after the event priced at £100 Edition of 100 with an A5 print.
