Fix Our Feeds Hackathon

Infosys

Team up with other full stack developers to design the next – ethical – generation of social media newsfeed algorithms.

Palo Alto

When designing social media newsfeeds, seemingly innocuous decisions can snowball into vast social impacts. As software developers and designers, we have a responsibility to the world to think code through carefully and design software that makes the world better, or, at least, no worse than it started out. And when our inventions spin out of control, we have a responsibility to understand why and find ways of amending the problem. There are three critical problems with the feeds we use today, each of which raises a question that we invite you to answer with code:

Misinformation and Feed Manipulation. How do we stop fake news spreading – and how do we stop automated tools from artificially amplifying misinformation in ways that create false waves of public opinion?

Bias to Controversy. How do we design newsfeed algorithms that prioritise truly valuable content over content which is sensational or controversial?

Filter Bubbles. How do we display personalised content at the same time as displaying content that challenges our opinions and prejudices?

Upon arrival you will be provided breakfast and grouped into teams of five. The hackathon will run for eight hours before the judges (Senior Technologists at Infosys) review projects and decide who will be honoured in the closing awards ceremony. ***Schedule***9am – Doors open and breakfast10am – Kick-off and run-through agenda and goals10:30 – Segmented group work starts1pm – Lunch arrives5-7pm – Presentations / judges deliberate / evening awards and closing***FAQ***✅ Who can come?Infosys welcomes all talented programmers in the Bay Area.
