<H2 CLASS="normal">FLOW / Day THREE / LIVE #1:  Contract With the Skin</H2>
Contract with the Skin is an afternoon of performances and durational actions. It comprises a gathering of performance artists, each presenting work in a shared space, one after the other, sometimes overlapping, merging beginnings and endings. With their body as archive and site of action, across space and time, they come individually and work collectively. Identity is only a placeholder for the wide range of individual practices and research that investigate across themes of racial and social justice, gender and sexual politics, body and material, voice and sound, public engagement and social experiment. Artists include: Bettina Fung, Mengting Zhuo, Quek Jia Qi, You He, Ada Hao, Kimvi Nguyen, Eunjung Kim, Nicholas Tee, Ying Xue, Tianqi Liu, Ni Li, Yanwen Xiong, Boram Moon, Howl Yuan.
Alongside this programme curated by Ada Hao (PAPRIKA Collective) and Bettina Fung, artists Samboleap Tol and Abbas Zahedi will be running a LIVE ARCHIVE/Artist workshop and Chi Bagtas and Glo Orpilla will be running PASAWAY SARI SARI STORE #000.

FLOW is a 3 day series of events, performances, talks, and screenings, initiated by Erika Tan in association with Researchers-in-Residence Bettina Fung & Ada Hao, Founding Member Annie Jael Kwan and with the participation, input and support of the AAA network, Iniva, Live Art Development Agency and Alex and Rhian from Raven Row.

LIVE #1:  Contract With the Skin

The actions here constitute a performative research into the institutionalized form of live art practice for which the discursive condition for Asian/Southeast Asian performance artists and activists are underscored.
Placed in the eyes of the beholder, the body is to distance the interplay between representation and presentation, and to negotiate a contract of decoloniality and solidarity with other protagonists of color.
This gathering is of performance artists of Asian descent.
Each work in the shared space, one after another, with a pause or in overlap.
A colonization in reverse, a parody of identity.
With their body as archive and site of action, along time, across spaces.
They come individually and work collectively.
Presence is preserved by the skin, imbued with the body, in contract with an urgency to be.
Identity is only a placeholder for the wide range of individual practice and research to investigate across themes of racial and social justice, gender and sex politics, body and material, voice and sound, public engagement and social experiment.

LIVE ARCHIVE / artist workshop. 
Saturday 6 October, 1-4pm
Artists Samboleap Tol and Abbas Zahedi invite artists and researchers to curate a live archive together. Participants are asked to bring any objects or ideas that relate to their current research and existence. These could include documents, artifacts, objects, artworks or even a half-eaten sandwich.
The aim of the workshop is to curate a space that can generate, unlock and (re)realise ideas and connections between the participants and their research. The process will be documented through a live recording and extensive note-taking.

PASAWAY SARI SARI STORE #000 is essentially a mutation of the concept of a Sari Sari, corner/convenience store and bodegas – places usually managed by people of colour; a multipurpose place that provide a “variety” of essential things and a point of social engagement for locals.
The concept focuses on establishing a first point of contact for people, utilising the notions of “variety” as an intervention; serving as a way to provide them with press releases for the entire event, as well as a place to participate, share, sell/donate (?) exchange and network.
In hopes to address a boundary of being the ‘other’, the piece oscillates between the interchangeable relationship of insider/outsider and self/other of the place it inhabits, creating a form of social exchange deep rooted from an exploration of transnational consciousness. A fragmented sense of being driven by its temporality, it constantly mutates itself, questioning the tension of what it means to exist and coexist parasitically throughout its duration in the environment it is in.

PARTICIPANT BIOGRAPHIES:
PASAWAY SARI SARI STORE #000. Chi Bagtas and Glo Orpilla are a duo of artists working within the collaborative practice: PASAWAY. Since 2015, it has been a practice that seeks to approach and deconstruct their affixation to the traditions that coincide from their Filipino-British identity, forming new meanings from differences in shared experiences. Samboleap Tol’s (b. 1990) current practice looks to expand her engagement with arts and its publics as well as to deepen her understanding of art’s social function and its role in contemporary culture and civic life. Abbas Zahedi (b. 1984, London) constructs multifaceted situations that explore the psychopolitics of contemporary reality. Often taking his own life as a performative point of departure; his proposal of neo-diaspora for the Diaspora Pavilion in Venice (2017) sought to disrupt notions of origin and settled identities. Bettina Fung | 馮允珊’s practice centres on drawing and focuses on its performative aspect. She draws live at exhibitions, sharing her process and allowing her work to unfold overtime. She has exhibited nationally and abroad. Mengting Zhuo is a Chinese performance maker based in London. She received her MA in Performance Making from Goldsmiths, University of London. She works with live medium to explore contingency of meaning, the process of translation and communication, and manipulation of technological tricks. She has made work for theatres, galleries and other spaces, including streets, a bar, and a residential flat. Her work has been performed/exhibited in international contexts. Quek Jia Qi is a socially-engaged artist and public practitioner, pursuing Fine Art & History of Art at Goldsmiths, University of London. Her social practice weaves through intersections of art, education and activism, exploring how narratives of vulnerability can build trust, strengthen relational connections and activate civic dialogue. You He received his MA in contemporary photography from Central Saint Martins, He sees art as a tool to break the rigid structure of society, and look for fluid transformation between different boundary conditions. He uses the joke and absurdity to tackle the serious topic as censorship, power and authority. Ada Hao is a performance artist, a research student in Fine Art at the Brighton University and currently doing a research residency with Asia Art Activism Research Network. Her art practice and research focus on performativity of contemporary bodies, dialectics of corporeality, the collective desire of becoming, and heterotopia (Foucault) in contemporary art practice negotiated with live performance, body simulation, physiology, digital sonification, hyperreality, science fiction, augmented reality and morphology. Kimvi Nguyen is a Visual Artist based in Winchester. Since graduating from Fine Art Sculpture at Winchester School of Art, Kimvi has continued to challenge her practise through creating site specific responses. Eunjung Kim is a Korean artist based in London. Kim’s practice encompasses performance, video, photography and dance, and centres on the process of becoming - the discovery of a sense of agency outside of the limits of social reality and the stability of identity. Through relational textures and fictional encounters, Kim questions the relationship between the machinery of repression and the realm of freedom that erupts within difference. Nicholas Tee is a London-based performance artist from Singapore. His practice uses live art and performance as a means of questioning contemporary cultural politics. His works usually interrogate themes of identity, immigration and race through the use endurance, pain, blood and shit. But today he can’t be there in person. Ying Xue pursuing her MA in Contemporary Art Practice: Performance at Royal College of Art. Tianqi Liu is a performance artist from China, studying in Royal College of Art: Performance now. She began to try a series of repetitive behaviors to seek for a covered and hidden internality and a silent confrontation with the real mediocre days and anxious emotions after her 24 hours’ prison experience in China. Her practice focus on recognising the real and fictitious parts of her capricious complex ego and self-images in the process of being infinitely internalized.
Ni Li is a contemporary artist, currently resides and works in Shanghai and London. She is best known for her contemporary take on classic calligraphy, as well as her unfamiliar visual languages. She started to produce moving images and installations after moving to Europe. Her work explores the subject matter of patriarchy, culture, and consumerism. At 2017, Ni Li has been awarded as “Artist of the Year” by Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center New York, her work UNTITLED was selected as the cover of Chamber Music Seoul edition 2017. Yanwen Xiong is a performance artist who trained as an opera singer, a musician, dancer and painter. Her philosophy is based on stretching; stretching of bodies, minds and sense. This implies touching upon limits and with this an exploration of border regions. There is also the edge between performance and the event but whatever the modulation the feeling of surprise lingers between the edges that are animated. Within this there is a feeling of warping space in order to occasion the collecting of abstract figures released by the configuration of forms. There is always the feeling of being allowed to savour a glimpse into some obscure memory palace that has never gained a name. Boram Moon (b. South Korea, 1988) has worked in performance, sculptural installation, and video focuses on the sensory responses evoked by power, pressure, posture, and gesture by interrupting the physical integrity of the materials. She investigates how it could be supported by the triggers caused by memories of the unconscious and presents different ways of emerging retrospection through psychological and philosophical grounds. Howl Yuan is Taiwanese performance maker based in Bristol. His practices focus on crossing-cultures, identity and human/object mobility. His works span performance, object, text, photograph and video, which presented in theatres, galleries, festivals across the UK and Taiwan.
