About this event

  • 2 hours 30 minutes

Our Forest Bathing+ sessions at National Trust Leith Hill consist of a 2.5-hour gentle walk under the canopy of trees, amongst beautiful woodland. You’ll be guided through a series of sensory exercises designed to develop a deeper connection with nature, calming body and mind, before we conclude with a guided relaxation.

During the session your Forest Bathing+ Guide will share some of the science that shows why time with trees is so good for us, including research into the surprising secret benefits of breathing woodland air. Our main aim, however, is to help you unwind.

Slowing right down and focusing on nature allows us to step away from our busy minds, letting worries and cares melt away. We experience the natural world in a different way, perhaps like a child would, seeing things in more detail, with clarity and awe. You'll never look at woodland in the same way again!

We are looking forward to sharing the restorative power of nature with you!

About The Forest Bathing Institute (TFBI)

Since its foundation in 2018 by Gary Evans and Olga Terebenina, guides from The Forest Bathing Institute have led hundreds of Forest Bathing+ sessions for thousands of people. We know it works from the transformations we have witnessed.

Science backs us up: there is a vast and ever-growing body of evidence showing the potential benefits of forest bathing from normalising blood pressure and reducing stress, to improving sleep and enhancing immune function.

TFBI itself is heavily involved in research with numerous universities across the globe, and studies have shown that our Forest Bathing+ sessions boost mood and nature connection, while reducing negative emotions such as depression and fatigue. Frequently asked questions

Can I get a refund on my ticket?

We are happy to move or refund your booking up to 1 week before the event. We will not refund or move any bookings with less than 1 week's notice.

Can I bring my dog?

Sorry, no dogs!

Is actual bathing in water involved?!

Contrary to popular belief, there is no actual bathing in water involved! Forest Bathing+ is a sensory connection journey, moving slowly through the woodland - mindfully connecting with all your senses for relaxation and wellbeing.

What should I wear for a session in the warmer months?

Forest Bathing’s slow pace means it can feel cooler than expected, especially in the woodland shade. Even in warm weather layers are advised, and please wear long sleeves and trousers to avoid stings/scratches. Wear enclosed shoes: flip flops/sandals are NOT suitable. Bring waterproofs if needed!

What should I wear for a session in the colder months?

Forest Bathing’s slow pace means it can feel colder than expected, especially in the woodland shade. To relax and unwind our clothes need to keep us warm, dry and comfortable, so please dress with this in mind. LOTS of layers are key on chillier days, along with hat/gloves/scarf and waterproofs.

What do I need to bring?

Please bring a picnic mat or similar to sit on, and a rucksack to carry anything else you might want (e.g. water, snacks, spare layers). Your Forest Bathing+ Guide will contact you in advance of the session with a reminder and any additional details.

Can I bring my daughter/son with me?

Sorry, this Forest Bathing+ event is for adults aged 18+ only. To check if there are events for families and/or children and young people in your area, please email info@tfb.institute.

I can only walk slowly/for short distances, will the session be suitable for me?

During our Forest Bathing+ events we tend to cover a distance of 1-2 kilometres. This will be at a slow pace, and there will be opportunities at various points to stop and sit. If you would like to have a chat before booking/attending please email info@tfb.institute.

Nature connection, mindfulness, events and pioneering university research

Our guides will lead you through an enjoyable sequence of mindful activities in a Forest environment, helping you relax and feel the benefits of spending time in woodland while a guide holds space for you.

Forest Bathing is the English translation of the Japanese term ‘Shinrin-yoku’. To better understand this concept, it means ‘spending quality time, fully immersed in the forest atmosphere, under the canopy of trees, for health and wellbeing purposes.

Our unique approach to Forest Bathing was developed through university collaborations and years of study into mindfulness, meditation and forest science, leading to the development of our Forest Bathing+ (FB+) events. FB+ has been measured to assist nine areas of wellbeing by the university of Derby - see our website for peer-reviewed papers.
