Foxfire Fungiverse : Hands-on workshop & lecture-performance
Foxfire Fungiverse is a hands-on workshop and lecture-performance, part of Xristina Sarli’s XR Citizen Science Kits and ongoing research exploring fungal bioluminescence — a naturally occurring metabolic process found in over 125 known fungal species worldwide.
Bioluminescent fungi emit light through an internal biochemical reaction, without external energy input or added chemicals. The glow is typically greenish and persists as long as the organism remains alive and metabolically active. This form of natural, non-toxic light can be observed for extended periods under stable conditions, sometimes lasting months and, in controlled environments, even years.
The workshop offers a direct encounter with these organisms in a darkened space, allowing participants to experience fungal light firsthand and to learn how and why certain fungi glow. The session also opens discussion around current research and multispecies futures.
Foxfire Fungiverse frames light as a living process rather than a technological product. These underground light bearers invite participants to rethink magic, energy, visibility, and coexistence through fungal intelligence.
