Mark Hibbett

A one-day comics symposium featuring an ecletic mix of comics practitioners and professionals discussing working within frameworks and creativity within restrictions.
Speakers:
PAUL ALEIXO Paul Aleixo is a senior lecturer in psychology at Sheffield Hallam University, and author of 'Biological Psychology, An Illustrated Survival Guide', an undergraduate level textbook in comics form. A recent paper in the Journal of Graphic Novels and Comics compared the memorability of comic strip material from this book with plain text, and with a version with incongruous images. The comic strip material was more memorable. Paul's presentation will outline this research, and examine psychological reasons behind potential benefits of comics in education'.
RICHARD DANIELS Richard Daniels is Senior Archivist of the University of the Arts London Archives and Special Collections Centre and is responsible for the day to day running of the centre ensuring that collections are preserved and catalogued appropriately so that they are accessible to researchers from across the University and beyond. The archive centre holds unique and diverse archives and special collections with particular strengths in film-making, graphic design, printing history and sound art. They provide a rich resource for teaching, learning and research. Richard will be introducing a sample of items from the centre’s extensive comic holdings which include the Les Coleman Collection, a significant assembly of comics from the North American underground and alternative comic book movements.
AL EWING Al is a comics writer who has written "Judge Dredd" and "Zombo" for 2000AD, "Doctor Who" for Titan and is currently working on "The Ultimates", "U.S.Avengers" and "Royals" for Marvel Comics. He will be discussing his career from fanzines to mainstream culture and the challenges presented by each.
EMMA HAYLEY Emma founded SelfMadeHero in 2007, and was named UK Young Publishing Entrepreneur of the Year 2008. She will give rare insights into the world of an independent publishing house, talking about balancing economic and artistic demands, approaches when editing and commissioning works, and how SelfMadeHero handles the competition with bigger publishing houses.
RACHAEL HOUSE Rachael House is an artist who makes events, objects, performances and comics. She believes that all of these things are the same, in spite of art world hierarchies. Some of Rachael’s projects in 2017 so far include work in Retropeck at Peckham Platform and The Inking Woman at The Cartoon Museum. Her Feminist Disco project has taken place at Elements Gallery (off-site project) and Peckham Platform, she has performed at Smack Dab, Dog Eared Books, San Francisco and moderated Punk Rock Menopause, a panel at Queers &amp; Comics Conference SF.
LEE LIGHTFOOT Lee is a comic Artist-Writer. He will talk about his graphic novel project "Cuckoo's Clock" and his current research concerning graphic novel illness narratives. He will explain how he is bending the aesthetic restrictions of the medium and pushing its limitations, while working with real patients and their medical files, always carefully balancing the person's dignity and privacy with his artistic visions.
JOSIE LONG Josie in an award-winning stand-up comedian, writer and campaigner. As well as writing and performing her own shows she has written for Radio 4, Channel 4 and produced a regular comic strip, "Josie Long's Alterative Universe", for The Guardian. She has long been a creator of fanzine comic strips to accompany her performances, and will be discussing the differences presented when doing similar work for a large organisation such as The Guardian.
JOHN MIERS John's doctoral research focuses on the central role visual metaphor plays in producing narrative meaning from sequences of drawings. He sees his use of visual scribing, whether performed privately in his notebook or publicly as a graphic facilitator, as an opportunity to apply this research by condensing complex discussions into surprising and illuminating imagery.
