CAS East CRC (University of Hertfordshire), in conjunction with Perse Upper School, Cambridge, are pleased to be running a fantastic, free, afternoon of CPD for primary school teachers.

During the event, you’ll undertake hands on sessions with a range of physical computing technologies, including Crumbles, micro:bits, Lego WeDo 2.0, Raspberry Pi, Pibrella, Codebug, Sphero and many more! You’ll be guiding robots, making wearable technology, programming lights, buzzers, buttons and everything in between. We’ll include practical ideas for use in the classroom, information on cross-curricular links and examine approaches to getting physical computing into the classroom for free!

The afternoon is suitable for all teachers of primary computing – from subject specialists to those teaching the new curriculum for the first time. Sessions will be led by: Neil Rickus – Senior Lecturer in Computing Education / CAS East CRC, University of Hertfordshire – Twitter @computingchamps

Presenter information:
Neil Rickus
Neil is a Senior Lecturer in Computing Education at the University of Hertfordshire and a member of the CAS East Regional Centre team. He is also the Computing tutor on the Primary PGCE courses for both Brunel University, London and the University of Leeds. He has successfully prepared hundreds of trainee teachers for life in schools and continues to teach Computing to primary aged pupils in a range of settings. His work is increasingly recognised at an international level and, most recently, Neil has been working as a consultant for Cambridge University in Astana, Kazakhstan, to ensure teachers in the government’s flagship Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools are able to deliver their revised computing schemes of work. Neil was also a lead contributor to European Schoolnet Academy’s (Brussels) “How to teach computing” MOOC and he has just returned from a visit to California, which involved investigating approaches used to engage all pupils in Computer Science. Within the UK, Neil’s most recent work has involved preparing primary school teachers for the new primary Computing National Curriculum; as both an independent consultant and for Rising Stars / Computing at School. Through his membership of NAACE, Neil also contributed to the professional body’s response on the government’s proposals for the revised curriculum. He is an approved examiner / moderator for Cambridge International Examinations’ iGCSEs, in addition to an assessor for the CAS / BCS Certificate in Computer Science Teaching.
