Event description

Description

In this very special women’s class, gay yoga teacher Andy Butterfield invites you into the liberating practice of naked yoga.

At its heart, yoga is about coming into deep acceptance of who we are and so practising naked is an example of how we can realise and embody that acceptance.

When we remove our clothes, it’s a metaphor for discarding shame and criticism and other ideas that do not serve us. We become free of the need to hide or pretend to be anything other than who we truly are.

Your body is a gift and a treasure and more beautiful and miraculous than you can imagine.

Come and honour this gift, as through a heart-lead flow, we invoke and embody the supreme qualities of the Goddess; grace, fierce compassion, courage and radical acceptance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be fully naked?

You are gently encouraged to coax yourself out of your comfort zone and yet if being completely naked feels too big an ask on the day then you are welcome to wear a sarong around your waist. As you begin to relax and feel more comfortable, you may decide to take it off but it’s your call.

What if I’m on my period?

If yoga postures feel good and beneficial during your period then you might prefer to wear knickers in the class

Will the studio doors and windows be covered over?

Yes, the room will be made more cosy and private and will be softly lit by electronic candles.

For more about Andy and why he wanted to share his naked yoga practice with Brighton women, read an extract from his blog:

I’ve been teaching naked yoga classes, workshops and retreats to men for over two years and it has been one of the most challenging, empowering and rewarding experiences of my career and my life. It’s helped me to dismantle the shame I’ve felt about the way my body looks and cultivate a new sense of respect, gratitude and even celebration. It’s also enabled me to help others feel better and more at home in their bodies and get more out of their yoga practice.

All of the women I’ve taught at The Float Spa have beautiful, strong and often dedicated practices. I wanted to bring naked yoga to them and offer them an opportunity to explore something different that could reveal even more depth, beauty, power and freedom in their practice and the way they experience themselves.

Practising naked yoga has been profoundly healing for me and helping others find their own healing is part of what I want to do in this world. In a society where we can feel diminished and disempowered by the way that advertising and the Media portray ideas of beauty, I think we need to find ways to reclaim ourselves and honour and celebrate our amazing bodies. Your body IS amazing and that is Truth.

When we step out of our clothing and out of the identity we construct with our clothes, we step into awareness, honesty and vulnerability. It is there that we expand our hearts and reconnect to our power, courage, resilience and strength. We decide that the ideas, beliefs and stories that hold us back don’t matter and so they lose their influence over us. We choose a new perspective, a more truthful one, based on kindness, compassion and acceptance. When we start to experience that via the body, it ripples out into other areas of our thinking and we become more free, more loving and more empowered.

Set the tone of 2018 with this radical and transformative practice. Invigorate not only your yoga but also your sense of who you are and who you can be. The Goddess is so alive within you. Free her.
