The RSE introduces a new series of online discussions around Artificial Intelligence: RSE Investigates … AI. These enlightening conversations will highlight the impact of AI on society and will be live streamed on Zoom each Tuesday (23 June – 14 July) at 2pm. The second talk of the series "From Automation to Autonomy: Collaborative Robots driving the Future of Work ," will be held with Professor Sethu Vijayakumar FRSE, University of Edinburgh, Director of Edinburgh Centre for Robotics and Programme co-Director for AI at The Alan Turing InstituteSpace exploration, Self-driving cars, Factories of the Future -- robots are increasing taking on more autonomous roles but what is the right balance between human control and autonomy? What are the breakthrough technologies driving this disruption, what are its limitations and can they help define the new normal in our post COVID future?Book your space and have your questions answered during the live Q&A.

Over the coming weeks, others innovators and visionaries in the talk series will include; <a href="https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/technologys-moral-debt-in-the-covid-19-era-tickets-110211936870">Dr Shannon Vallor</a>, the Baillie Gifford Chair in the Ethics of Data and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Edinburgh; and Professor of Computing Science at Heriot-Watt University, <a href="https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/challenges-and-opportunities-of-machine-learning-for-conversational-ai-tickets-110211216716">Verena Rieser</a>.

<h3>Speaker Spotlight</h3>Sethu Vijayakumar is the Professor of Robotics at the University of Edinburgh, UK and the Director of the Edinburgh Centre for Robotics. He has pioneered the use of large scale machine learning techniques in the real-time control of several iconic robotic platforms such as the SARCOS and the HONDA ASIMO humanoids, KUKA-LWR robot arm and iLIMB prosthetic hand. His latest project (2016) involves a collaboration with NASA Johnson Space Centre on the Valkyrie humanoid robot being prepared for unmanned robotic pre-deployment missions to Mars. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, a judge on BBC Robot Wars and winner of the 2015 Tam Dalyell Prize for excellence in engaging the public with science. Professor Vijayakumar helps shape and drive the national Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS) agenda in his recent role as the Programme co-Director for Artificial Intelligence (AI) at The Alan Turing Institute, the UK’s national institute for data science and AI.
