Photojournalism Hub welcomes three photographers whose work addresses disabilities and stigmas - of their own or of the others .

Living with one or more chronic conditions is the daily routine of so many people in the world. Nonetheless, the way visible and invisible illnesses are portrayed by media, films, and schoolbooks can be highly frustrating. "The disabled" tend to be portrayed as dependent persons who constantly need help. When they are not, they tend to suddenly become heroes, simply for facing their daily lives. Both views point out that the invisible barrier of unconscious stereotypes and bias on the others' daily truth is the biggest hurdle for a disabled person. For this reasons, Photojournalism Hub welcomes three photographers whose work addresses disabilities and stigmas - of their own or of the others - in differently unique ways: <a href="https://www.instagram.com/patricialaydorsey/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Patricia Lay-Dorsey</a>, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/cinejamographer/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Jameisha Prescod </a>and <a href="https://www.instagram.com/sophieharristaylor/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Sophie Harris Taylor.</a><a href="https://www.instagram.com/patricialaydorsey/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"></a>Patricia Lay Dorsey (born 1942) believes that sharing our personal stories can bridge our divides. So it was natural to her to bring a background as a social worker and visual artist to her work as a Detroit-based photographer. Diagnosed with MS in 1988, she has shared her own story of disability after 25 years in her renowned self-portrait book “Falling into Place”. Her work has been featured in print, online, in exhibits and as a catalyst for interactive discussions on self-image, health issues, feelings of otherness and creativity. Patricia was also selected for Photolucida 2015 Critical Mass Rauschenberg Residency Award. Jameisha Prescod, (born 1996), is a London-based filmmaker and chronic illness advocate. Her activities are driven by storytelling and apply creative digital techniques to uncover powerful human experiences. Jameisha specialises in documentary, video journalism and poetic essay films. Her 27k-followers Instagram page @YouLookOkToMe is a beacon of hope and inspiration for persons affected by chronic invisible illness. Jameisha' s ‘Untangling’, a self-portrait in which she sits in her cluttered bedroom knitting to manage low mood, won the 2021 Wellcome Photography Prize.Sophie Harris Taylor (born 1988) is a documentary-based photo artist confronting the audience with the personal lives and experiences of her own and others' vulnerabilities; always with a discrete, intimate and unbiased glance. Typically portraiture based, Sophie’s work is effortlessly truthful. She is renowned for her images created with natural and ambient light sources that express her own pre-occupations and concerns. Sophie's 'Epidermis' series features 20 women with varying skin conditions, completely make-up-free. Normality is defined by the images we see all around us. We are led to believe all women must have idealised flawless skin - but they do not. Many women have conditions they feel pressure to hide behind a mask of makeup, covering up what actually makes them unique. Here these beautiful women stand unashamed of baring their skin. Sophie has been selected for the Taylor Wessing Prize, Creative Review Photography Annual and the BJP Portrait of Britain amongst others.This event will be hosted by Sabrina Merolla.
