FtP:  The lost workforce?

During Fitness to Practice investigations many may not be able to continue working - we want to explore this further.

We know that whilst under investigation many employers are reluctant to recruit a nurse, midwife or nursing associate. Those who have been given an Interim Conditions of Practice Order need to work in order to prove to the NMC they pose no current risk of harm and fulfill the conditions set.With the current challenges that employers face during the pandemic and with workforce issue causing difficult to supervise existing teams, adding an additional need for further supervision can be challenging.Others may be given an Interim Suspension Order whilst the NMC investigate the case, as the NMC deem risk to public safety is high. However this is based on allegations and not proven facts which is concerning. We ask:1. Does FtP impact the workforce through professionals unable to practice whilst investigations are carried out?2. Does FtP impact the workforce through professionals not returning to practice after investigations are completed?3. Does FtP affect loss skill mix of workforce as valuable experienced healthcare professionals step away from roles?Chaired by:Cathryn Watters: Founder of NMCWatch &amp; RGNPanel Members:1.Deborah Hughes: Having qualified as a nurse in 1980 and as a midwife in 1982 she currently works as a research midwife at The University of Cambridge. She has worked as a hospital and community midwife, an independent midwife, a university teacher, a birth centre midwife, and a midwifery manager. Professional interests are women's autonomy and midwifery autonomy, two sides of the human rights in birth coin. I set up Midwives Haven (under the organisational umbrella of the Association of Radical Midwives) with Angie Barrett in 2017. We were aware of many midwives struggling with bullying, investigations, and NMC referral and that some midwives had taken their own lives when faced with the wall of Fitness to Practise. I believe a fairer, kinder, human rights-focussed and more professionally insightful way of delivering professional discipline is possible and is urgently needed and we decided to take action to achieve this.2. Annie Norman. RN, Whistleblower and campaigner. Annie has been a registered nurse since 1992 and in the last 10 years has experienced bullying as a nurse in the workplace, following raising concerns over patient safety . In 2014 Annie whistle-blew and from 2012-2018 was a member of Patients First UK. This was a successful whistleblowing campaign group working between politicians and the legal world. She has also helped to highlight campaigning issues with respectable academic researchers to raise the profile for a review of the law that would safeguard protection for whistleblowers. Annie has studied the impact of bullying cultures on nursing profession and impact on patient safety. 3. Jan Cruickshank - whistleblower: Jan worked in construction mentoring and managing trade apprentices &amp; exceeded the area targets, completed leadership and management training. She felt she had found her role in life but her life changed when she was sexually harassed in the industry and eventually reported her colleague, believing the matter could be resolved. The company turned on her and after a harrowing battle she lost her career. A lengthy legal process followed and she received a settlement and an apology and managed to fight an NDA to speak publicly about my experiences. Determined to make a difference and facilitate changes in the system, she has been working hard with others to introduce a fair reporting system, which treats everyone with the humanity they deserve. 4. Chris Warren - midwife: Trained at St Heliers, Carshaltton, as a nurse originally and then later as a midwife. She then worked at Mayday, Croydon, where I became a RCM steward and supported midwives, particularly when the HOM was a controlling bully. She tried to bully me but I won the case against me on appeal. After 8 years in the community, I had my daughter and later that year went independent to combine good mothering with continuity of carer midwifery. I supported several midwives and provided expert witness evidence for others. I am currently working in North Yorkshire, frustrated by the lack of insurance for birth care attendance. She has worked as a midwife for 38 years and says she still loves it.5. Meurig Boggust - mental health nurse. Having been cleared at a NC investigation and case closed Meurig did not expect to still have issues with employment opportunities - particularly in relation to one health board.6. Dr Lesley Bailey - yes, I am a nurse with a PhD - a "real" doctor ( as my other half occasionally reminds me - he's a GP!). I first qualified back in 1985 as a politically incorrect "Mental Handicap" Nurse and did my RGN second! By 24, I was a Senior Sister on an adolescent unit for severely learning disabled young people with a psychiatric overlay. I happily worked there introducing personalised care planning and a key worker scheme until I was made redundant when the hospital closed in 1991. So, I had my third child and, on the advice of my Health Visitor, trained as a Health Visitor, qualifying in 1993. It made me ask questions, and aroused my inner nerd, so I completed my MSc in Health Research and perhaps would have remained a Health Visitor except for the brain tumour that robbed me of my driving license in 2004. I was awarded an ill health retirement pension and thought that was it. But the practice I had been health visitor for needed a Practice Nurse and in 2005, I went back, though only for 10 hours a week. I had surgery and radiotherapy, did another Masters and a PhD and all sorts of things and here I am. I was midway through my PhD when I had the brain surgery, and it is my great joy to work on the research committee of the Raymond A Wood Foundation (a non-profit organisation for pituitary and hypothalamic tumour survivors and their families based in the USA) I am a church minister and theological writer. I have reviewed books for a nursing journal and up until August of last year was Nurse Consultant for one of the biggest nutritional supplement companies in the south east of England, writing all their training materials. I'm Mum to three adult children with disabilities, and I'm marrying my wonderful other half on June 12th!
