My mother’s passion for cooking originated in my grandmother’s kitchen. As a young, nontraditional woman growing up in Japan, my mother moved to France in her early 20s to experience new culture, language, art, and food. Feeling liberated from the traditional and strict holds of Japanese society, my mother enrolled in culinary school and began to refine the very skills she learned as a child next to my grandmother.
Growing up, I listened to her vivid stories about travelling through France and experiences in culinary school. But, she had given up her own dreams to move to a new country and raise a family. Seeing how bright her eyes lit up when she spoke about her culinary dreams, it wasn’t long until my brother and I tried to encourage her to open a Japanese restaurant in our San Diego neighborhood. In response, she made excuses about people not liking Japanese food and how no one would understand her broken English. 
Fast forward 10 years. About a month ago, my roommate, Dani, shared her photography from her study abroad in Hong Kong. As she flipped through photos of Japan, I felt a wave of emotion. I realized she walked the same streets that my grandmother, mother, and I did en route to riding the subway into the city. Somehow, she not only captured the streets of Tokyo, but also my childhood, and I knew I was looking at something special. Dani began to explain how oversaturated the photography scene is, and how it’s almost impossible for new photographers to make a name for themselves. I was extremely saddened to hear this. 
I couldn’t help but think that if everyone could experience her photography in the same way I did, she would never have to work a 9-5 again.

So, we invite you to come dine with us and experience the marriage of food and art at our one night pop-up restaurant, Fumi—named after my grandmother. At Fumi, we’ve reimagined dining, and you will have the opportunity to explore Dani’s photography through the lens of my mother’s 5 course meal. Tickets are extremely limited, so lucky you for getting the invite! But, act fast, because they will sell out.
In order to further celebrate our community, art, and food, all profits will be donated to <A HREF="http://www.drawbridge.org/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">DrawBridge</A>, an organization that offers free art classes in dozens of homeless shelters, safe houses, and other low-income facilities to children throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.
