Function Schmunction is coming to NEA! Creating opportunities for authentic autistic play, joy and connection for local residents.

<h3>Function Schmunction is coming to North Edinburgh Arts!</h3> Function Schmunction is a project all about celebrating and creating opportunities for authentic autistic play, joy and connection. The project seeks to include autistic individuals and their communities of all ages, life experiences, interests and needs. The project is led by <a href="https://playradical.com/" title="https://playradical.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Max Alexander</a>, an autistic artist and play worker.The project includes the Function Schmunction play space which is designed to encourage diving into the senses and imagination and includes a giant-ball pit, hideaways for nesting, sonic plumbing devices to explore sounds and voice, a space to commune with pebbles and sticks and more!North Edinburgh Arts is delighted to host the project, with a focus on supporting local autistic children and young people living in North Edinburgh.Please note: No formal referral or diagnosis is required to attend these sessions. The Function Schmunction play space will be installed in North Edinburgh Arts over four Play Days in June 2025: <ul><li>Tuesday 3rd June</li><li>Wednesday 4th June</li><li>Tuesday 10th June</li><li>Wednesday 11th June</li></ul> Who can come to Play Days?We are inviting local families, schools, early years providers and/or organisations supporting young autistic people and their peers to bring children and young people who live locally to North Edinburgh Arts to visit the Play Space.Multiple time slots enable children and young people to be brought in small groups and/or on a 1-to-1 basis. We will work together to figure out the best offering for your children and young people. The sessions will be supported by Max and another local play worker.Please note: No formal referral or diagnosis is required to attend these sessions.If you are interested please get in touch with admin@northedinburgharts.co.uk and we will arrange a chat to figure out how we can best welcome your children and young people to the space. About Max Alexander:Max Alexander is a play worker, artist and educator who specialises in working with children and young people who are disabled and/or have additional support needs. Max has twelve years' experience working with this population across school, playground, and community settings. Max creates and co-creates spaces for play, exploration, and connection with a focus on neurodivergent joy and ways of relating. Max is passionate about access to artistic, playful, and creative experiences for neurodivergent and disabled individuals and the idea of beautiful creative accessibility is central to his work.
