Outdoor Learning Programme

All the events in the 2025/26 Outdoor Learning Programme aim to engage people with their local environment, through a variety of walks, workshops and talks.

Make exciting and dynamic drawings inspired by the seasonal natural world. We will wander the woodland to make swift sketches, take bark rubbings and bring back leaves, stones, twigs, lichen and berries to make a nature table. Using natural materials such as charcoal, earth pigments and ink, we will start with a collaborative excercise, then move on to individual studies. A workshop for adults of all abilities to learn new techniques and enhance existing skills.Workshop Tutor - Sophie WoodhouseI have a B.A. and M.A. in arts and have taught and lectured in art and craft for around 25 years. I am most interested in the connection between art and nature, sketching directly from the natural world and using natural history as the inspiration for printmaking and design. I believe that studying the landscape, flora and fauna about us, we can heal ourselves and be moved to protect nature. Above all, art can be sociable, playful and experimental. Severn Gorge Countryside TrustThis workshop is being hosted by the Severn Gorge Countryside Trust, a local charity.The Trust’s aim is to promote, protect and conserve the living landscape of the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site, which has a diverse range of habitats, including wildflower meadows, woodlands and heathlands. But that’s not all! Whether it’s letting your creativity flow, encouraging you to enjoy the simple pleasure of spending time outside in nature, or learning a new skill, there is something for everyone!Engaging with nature has been well demonstrated to have positive effects on both mental and physical wellbeing. We hope that this in turn promotes the desire to protect and preserve the natural environment, for present and future generations.Be inspired in nature’s classroom!
