World Values Day Team

This event on 6th November introduces an exciting new global initiative involving many key figures in the field of  values education

The Global Alliance for Values-based Education (GAVE) is an international, interdisciplinary, non-profit organisation made up of scholars, educators, practitioners, students, leaders, policy-makers, citizens, and organisations who have come together in the spirit of collaboration to identify and advance research, practice, and policy in values and values-based education across the world. GAVE explores how to best educate, train, and support teachers, scholars, practitioners, caregivers, leaders, and citizens to navigate the key challenges currently influencing human learning, growth, and development. GAVE seeks understanding of what matters most in schools and classrooms, but also in any organization or system that values learning, development, caregiving, collaboration, and wellbeing. This event on Thursday 6th November marks the public launch of GAVE and provides an opportunity to hear from and speak with GAVE’s leadership and renowned figures in the field of values and values-based education about this global movement and community, its impact, and what GAVE can do for you and/or your organisation. There will be two separate but similar sessions, both on 6th November to suit different global time zones: First Session: 8 am to 9am UTC/GMT Second Session: 4 pm to 5pm UTC/GMT If you and/or your organisation are interested in… ● understanding what “values” are and why they are core to being human● participating in and shaping national and international values-based events● developing high quality values-based curricula, programs, and interventions● learning how to evaluate the effectiveness of values-based education● reviewing and developing values-based policies and practices that actually work● networking with scholars, educators, and practitioners who share your interests● advancing your values-based research or professional goals as a student● shaping the future of GAVE by joining a committee or assuming a leadership role● building a world that is grounded in values that are sustainable and universal …then GAVE is right for you! MODERATORS: Dr. Shagufa Kapadia is Emeritus Professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies. She was the former department Chair and Hon. Director of the Women’s Studies Research Center at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Vadodara, India. Her primary interest is in cultural perspectives in human development with special focus on adolescent and youth development, gender and women’s issues, parenting and socialization, and morality (<a href="https://vidwan.inflibnet.ac.in/profile/52423" title="https://vidwan.inflibnet.ac.in/profile/52423" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://vidwan.inflibnet.ac.in/profile/52423</a>). She has significant international research and teaching experience. She is a member of the GAVE Steering Committee.Charles Fowler chairs the <a href="https://humanvaluesfoundation.com/" title="https://humanvaluesfoundation.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Human Values Foundation</a>, which uses positive values to promote young people’s social and emotional development, helps run the <a href="https://valuesalliance.co.uk/" title="https://valuesalliance.co.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">UK Values Alliance</a>, is a steering committee member of the Global Alliance for Values-based Education, and a project partner of the Collaborating Centre for Values-based Practice for Health and Social Care at Oxford University. He is also a delegate at the <a href="https://www.values20.org/" title="https://www.values20.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Values20</a> Group which engages G20 leaders in values-based policy-making, and is the Global Coordinator of World Values Day. SPEAKERS: Dr. Kris Acheson-Clair (PhD in Intercultural Communication, 2008, Arizona State University) is former faculty at Georgia State University and Fulbright Scholar to Honduras. For the past decade she has directed Purdue University's Center for Intercultural Learning, Mentorship, Assessment and Research, the creators of the Intercultural Learning Hub (<a href="http://www.hubicl.org/" title="http://www.hubicl.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">www.hubicl.org</a>) science gateway of resources for interculturalists. Her research focuses on the assessment of intercultural competence and transformative learning. Professor Nazreen Dasoo is an Associate Professor who heads the Department for Education and Curriculum Studies in the Faculty of Education at the University of Johannesburg. She also holds the UNESCO/UNITWIN Chair in Values Education – Learning to Live Together. Nazreen sits on the board of the Living Values Association of South Africa (LIVASA) and has served as Chair of GAVE in 2024. Dr. Ron and Suwanti Farmer - Ron lectured clinical psychology in University of New South Wales, and trained the first practitioners of CBT and behaviour modification in Australia. Ron and Suwanti conduct workshops in values education to help teachers and parents undergo personal transformation to become good role models for the children they care for. They founded <a href="https://www.toogoolawa.com.au/" title="https://www.toogoolawa.com.au/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Toogoolawa Schools in Australia</a> which for 25 years has provided free, full-time values education for boys whose behaviour makes them unwelcome in mainstream schools. Dr. Neil Hawkes is a well known worldwide as a speaker, educator, broadcaster, author and social commentator (<a href="www.neilhawkes.org/" title="www.neilhawkes.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">www.neilhawkes.org/</a>). He was co-founder of Living Values Education, founder of International Values-based Education Trust and its educational arm Values-based Education (VbE), and a co-founder of Global Alliance for Values-based Education. He is one of the UNITAR experts on ethical leadership and is part of the Values20 task group advising the G20 leaders. He has written several books including “From My Heart, transforming lives through values”. Professor Terry Lovat is Emeritus Professor at University of Newcastle (Australia), Distinguished Visiting Professor and UNESCO-Unitwin Partner at University of Johannesburg, South Africa, Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Oxford (UK), Honorary Professor at the University of Glasgow (UK), and Adjunct Professor at Royal Roads University (Canada). His most recent research focuses have been on values education and Islam. He was chief investigator of research and practice projects for the Australian Values Education Program (2003-2010). Dr. Thomas Nielsen is Associate Professor of Education at the University of Canberra, Australia. He has taught teacher education to undergraduate and postgraduate K-12 teachers for over 20 years; has served in several of the Australian Government funded values and wellbeing education projects (395 schools) from 2004 to 2010, and won National awards for his research-led teaching. Dr. Nielsen specialises in wellbeing education, values and character education, and whole-person education. He advocates a ‘Curriculum of Giving'. A licensed clinical psychologist, he served as Professor of Graduate Psychology at James Madison University for over 20 years. He is a Fulbright Specialist in Japan, Fellow of the American Psychological Association, and a Nehru Chair at M.S. Baroda University in India. Professor Ron Toomey is Emeritus Professor from the College of Arts, Business, Law, Education and IT at Victoria University, Melbourne, Australia. For the past twenty years, his research has concentrated on Values-based Education, a topic he has often been invited to address at international conferences including in Australia, India, the USA and Singapore.
