The Centre for the Study of Social and Global Justice (CSSGJ) is honoured to welcome Tariq Ali as the speaker for our 2025 Annual Lecture: “Gaza and the Demise of International Law and Order.”

Tariq Ali is one of the world’s most influential public intellectuals – a writer, historian, filmmaker, and activist whose voice has shaped debates on empire, war, democracy, and resistance for over half a century. From the upheavals of 1968 to today’s struggles for justice in the Middle East and beyond, his work has been a touchstone for critical thinking and radical politics across generations.

Over the course of his career, Ali has published more than fifty books. He has written countless essays and articles for leading outlets, made award-winning films, and continues to be a central figure in the global intellectual and activist landscape. His wide-ranging contributions have made him an indispensable voice in debates on imperialism, democracy, and the future of the left.

In this lecture, Ali will examine how the destruction of Gaza and the complicity of global powers expose the deep crisis of international law, the collapse of multilateral institutions, and the erosion of even the pretence of a rules-based order. Situating these events within a wider history of imperialism and resistance, he will ask what this moment means for the future of justice, solidarity, and international politics.

For CSSGJ, it is a privilege to host a thinker of Tariq Ali’s stature for our Annual Lecture. This promises to be a landmark event – one that confronts the defining questions of our time and invites us to reflect critically on the possibilities of resistance and change.

The lecture will take place online via Zoom in Webinar format and will include time for audience Q&A.
