Join us for the launch of 'Genome Detectives', a citizen-science project where you can help us to  fight infectious diseases!

GENOME DETECTIVES - WE NEED YOUR HELP!Infectious diseases continue to be a major threat despite modern medicine and healthcare - the world was brought to a near standstill by COVID-19. Using DNA from bacteria we are continually seeking new and better ways to prevent and treat infections, but there is a very large amount of genome data crunching to do and a limit to how much scientists can achieve on their own. Now you can help us! By using the Zooniverse platform, citizen scientists can help us to classify genes and identify mutants/variants from more than 100 disease-causing bacteria. You will be contributing to scientific research and policy for preventing and treating infectious diseases. Anyone can be a Genome Detective, you just need a computer and an internet connection! The Genome Detectives project and this launch event are aimed at people aged 14 years or older. No prior scientific knowledge is required, just some time and curiosity to start hunting through genomes.FREE! LAUNCH EVENT ON WEDNESDAY 13TH JULY 2022, ATTEND IN-PERSON OR ONLINEJoin us for a live demonstration of how you can participate in Genome Detectives, together with short presentations explaining why we need your help and how your contribution will advance research into vaccine design and antibiotic therapies. For the in-person event at the Oxford Museum of Natural History, in addition;•	Try out the Genome Detectives project for yourselves with our help •	See how we grow, observe and research bacteria that cause disease•	Learn how to extract DNA from fruit•	Participate in DNA-based quizzes •	Come and meet the scientists working in infectious disease research!Light refreshments will be available.Alternatively, please register for a ticket on-line and join us for presentations starting at 7.30pm from the comfort of your own home. A Zoom meeting link will be shown on your ticket and also emailed to you before the event.We gratefully acknowledge funding by the Wellcome Trust.
