CPD for those looking to launch or participate in a STEM club, with a focus on using the RAEng Resources: Engineering in a Pandemic

About this event

This session is intended for STEM Ambassadors and teachers who have an interest in STEM Clubs or practical activities. The session focus is using the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) resources to engage students within the context of a STEM Club.

The session will be delivered by the STEM Club Champions for West England and Sam Lawrence, the local RAEng Teacher Coordinator. While the resources used in this session are developed by RAEng, Ambassadors from all backgrounds would be welcome to attend (more on these resources is below).

CPD Aim

  1. To help attendees assess the needs of students and how to create a STEM Club that can grow to be successful and thriving.
  2. To understand how resources and practical activities can be used to engage students in STEM, with a particular focus on the resources available from RAEng and their latest offer 'Engineering in a Pandemic'.
  3. Where these resources can be found and how to successfully utilize them with groups of young people.

Teachers that attend the session will receive a free set of RAEng Engineering in a Pandemic resources to use in their STEM Club

For STEM Ambassadors who wish to attend this CPD our hope is that you will be able to offer an insight into the STEM you have undertaken during the pandemic, to support delivery of the new RAEng resources through possible careers links and potentially hands-on support for a new STEM club (COVID restrictions permitting)

Engineering in a Pandemic: About this resource

While the pandemic has had devasting global effects, the engineering community worked together to quickly respond to the sudden demands of coronavirus, even finding opportunities for positive change.

Engineers have created emergency ventilators, diagnostic tests and manufacturing methods, helped increase hospital capacity, ensure that vulnerable people can safely get supplies and helped us all stay in touch with family and friends while social distancing. Challenges in this STEM resource include getting creative moulding viruses, exploring what happens in an outbreak, investigating lateral flow tests, designing and developing social distancing tools, testing and trialling different types of surgical masks and investigating the tech that has helped us manage the pandemic.
