Event description
What do we know about Oliver Cromwell’s personal faith? How did this manifest in his struggle to create a church for a ‘New Jerusalem’?

About this event

We know everything and nothing about Cromwell’s faith. We know he was a devout puritan but he left no written or spoken record of his beliefs and we don’t know how he worshipped. Yet Cromwell’s religion was not an entirely private matter. During the years of his Protectorate he devoted much time and energy to reconstructing the failing national church into a robust godly ministry. In this lecture Rebecca will focus on Cromwell’s role in the struggle to build a godly church in Britain fit for the new Jerusalem he so passionately hoped to establish.

Dr Rebecca Warren is a historian of the seventeenth century, specialising in religion in the 1640s and 1650s. She is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Kent and is one of the Cromwell Museum’s Advisory Panel. She is currently writing a book on the English church in the Interregnum.

This is part of a four part lecture series on the Civil War period. Discounted combined tickets for all four talks can be purchased at: the Cromwell Lecture Series (click on this title for the link).

The other talks are:

Wednesday 3 November at 7.30pm - Professor Alan Marshall on ‘Intelligence, Espionage and Cromwell’s Protectorate’

Wednesday 17 November at 7.30pm - Dr Linda Porter on ‘The Tenderest Sight: Cromwell & Charles I’s children’

Wednesday 24 November at 7.30pm - Professor Ronald Hutton on ‘Oliver Cromwell: Saint or Serpent?’

PLEASE NOTE: This talk will be held online via Zoom. Joining details will be sent out 48 hours before the talk. The talks are recorded and will be available on a private channel for ticket holders to view afterwards if they miss the 'live' talk or wish to watch it again.
