The Festival of Making 2018 conference programme includes a series of special preview screenings of Graphic Means.
This documentary film by <A HREF="http://briarlevit.com" TARGET="_blank" TITLE="Briar Levit" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Briar Levit </A>considers what the design industry looked like prior to the moment when the first Macintosh computer was introduced.

Up until just over 30 years ago, when the desktop computer debuted, the whole design production process would have been done primarily by hand, and with the aid of analog machines. The design and print industries used a variety of ways to get type and image onto film, plates, and finally to the printed page. 
<A HREF="http://www.graphicmeans.com" TARGET="_blank" TITLE="Graphic means" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Graphic Means </A>is a journey through this transformative Mad Men-era of pre-digital design production to the advent of the desktop computer. It explores the methods, tools, and evolving social roles that gave rise to the graphic design industry as we know it today.
This film will be introduced by Dave Kirkwood. Following the screening we also discuss the landscape of design at this time and the impact since in a Q&A, including designers Tash Willcocks, Ian Swift (AKA Swifty) and Malcolm Garrett, who along with Swifty is featured in the film.
Aimed at industry specialists, students and anyone interested in discovering more about design in the pre-digital age and how those skills relate to roles now. All are welcome.
Biographies:
<A HREF="http://www.davekirkwood.com" TARGET="_blank" TITLE="Dave Kirkwood" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dave Kirkwood</A> founded his art and design practice, Dave Kirkwood Studio, in 2007. Alongside Dave's client work he develops experimental working models for generating unique solutions to core brand visual communications problems. Dave's commercial work is underpinned by a body of self-initiated projects and stimulated by the teaching they undertake. Previous projects include 3hundredand65 – a graphic novel created on Twitter in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust.
<A HREF="http://www.swifty.co.uk" TARGET="_blank" TITLE="swift" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Ian Swift (AKA Swifty)</A> is a dedicated graphic artist. Since embarking on his career at The Face magazine in 1986 he has pursued an individual course, which has led him to specialise in the music industry and youth culture aesthetics. Equally at home with a club flyer or a complex movie title sequence, he has successfully run his own practice ‘Swifty - Grafix’ for over two decades.
<A HREF="https://www.malcolmgarrett.com" TARGET="_blank" TITLE="Malcolm Garrett" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Malcolm Garrett</A> is creative director of the design group Images&Co. His career is rooted in Manchester music and culture, from his record sleeves for Buzzcocks to magazines. He is a member of the Sir Misha Black Awards Committee. In 2000 he became the first interaction designer appointed as an RSA Royal Designer and was elected Mast of the Faculty from 2013–15. Last year he was one of the first ten designers inducted into the Design Week Hall of Fame, and this year was named one 50 Creative Leaders by Creative Review. 
It’s been more than 20 years since <A HREF="https://www.hyperisland.com/community/people/tash-wilcocks" TARGET="_blank" TITLE="tash wilcocks" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Tash Wilcocks</A> dipped her toe into the creative and design industry. In that time she’s been an album creative for Elbow, designed skateboards with Linder Sterling, and led graphic design courses at Salford University. She’s now helping Hyper Island students worldwide to discover new skills in digital management and digital experience design.Tash’s recent projects include MapMyMCR, a map of illustrated buildings and their narratives. Her daily typographic project <A HREF="http://www.cfcca.org.uk/archive/2014/mundaneaday" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Mundaneaday</A> is now in its sixth year.

Join us for a series of presentations, panels, and discussions to be held in Blackburn and Preston from 10 May onwads. We will be exploring the relationship between making, skills, and new or emerging technologies, through a variety of events aimed at creative practitioners, professional makers, manufacturing businesses, and those working in related fields.
