What are lichens and why are they important?
Lichens are a ‘keystone’ species in many ecosystems. They serve as a food source and habitat for many animals such as deer, birds and rodents. They provide nesting materials for birds. They protect trees and rocks from extreme elements such as rain, wind and snow. They are also an indicator of air quality.
Join members of the Plymouth Lichen Group on a guided walk in Central Park to learn more about this these fascinating species and their relationship with trees.
The walk is free, although, because this event is space limited, we are asking for either a refundable deposit of £5 (+ booking fee) or a donation to Plymouth Tree People.
We will meet at the Clock Tower/Meadow Café, Central Park.
Children from age 10 upwards are welcome. Anyone under 18 should be accompanied by an adult.
Accessibility - we will not be walking far but we will be going off the paths.
Clothing should be suitable for outdoors (possibly wet/muddy, cold/hot) and standing.
Bring hand lenses if possible but these will also be provided.
Please let us know if you cannot make it, so we can offer your space to someone who can.
The Plymouth Urban Tree Festival is supported by The Plymouth & South Devon Community Forest.
