GW4 Experimental Methods for Complex Fluids and Microfluidics
Complex fluids are a common occurence in many disciplines of research. For instance in biology, blood is considered to be a complex fluid as it contains two phases, cells and plasma. In chemical engineering, foams are prevalent and are complex due to their gas and liquid phases. Microfluidics has also been an evolving area of research which involves the mixing and sorting of small volumes of fluids for biosensing and diagnosis. Microbubbles and nano particles for the cellular and pharmaceutical transport around the body has been an ongoing investigation in the biomedical industry.
To understand methods used for analysis of complex fluids in terms of velocity measurements and rheology and how we can create microfludic devices easily and at low cost is important for any researcher.
This Doctoral Training Day will introduce you to a number of areas of research in complex fluids and microfluidics. Delivered through a series of seminars including velocity measurements using PIV and DUS, rheological meausrements of biofluids and developing field of low cost microfluidics
The following sessions will be included:
Session 1: Velocity Flow Measurements
Session 2: Low Cost Mircofluidics
Session 3: Rheology of Biofluids
Session 4: Blood Flow Measurements
Session 5: Nanoparticle Manufacture
This day is open to students from any GW4 institution (Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter) who have a keen interest in fluids/microfluidics for their research.
Lunch will also be provided and travel to the university will be reimbursed.
