Event description

Description

Hack for Impact: Yorkshire - an open 'social impact' hackathon for Yorkshire
Tuesday 16 July & Wednesday 17 July
Tweed Suite, Cloth Hall Court, Quebec Street, Leeds

Arup, Stantec and Yorkshire Water are leading a national conference themed around the six capitals to explore how and why businesses and other institutions across Yorkshire are leading the world in innovative ways to better support the communities they serve and the environment we all rely on.

During the conference, ODI Leeds will be convening a related workshop exploring how the 6 capitals can be used to create an 'impact dashboard' for Yorkshire: accessible and interactive visualisations to help the region's residents and organisations understand their impacts and create changes for good. We will take a look at what open data is currently available, where the gaps are, and what kinds of things could be made with this data.

Working towards a tangible prototype lets us experience the challenges and then ask the right questions. If you start building a dashboard, who will see it? What do they want to know from it versus what you can actually show them?

Visit the event website for more resources, data, etc.

Teams are welcome :D And if you've already started to work on something that explores social impact and value, please bring it along - this could be the perfect event to find the missing piece you need to make it work.

Taking place over the same two days as the main conference, the workshop will follow this agenda;
(subject to change, please check for updates)

Tuesday 16 July

8:30am - Arrival and registration
9:00am - Launch of the hackathon
9:30am - Introducing the data sources, the methodology, the definitions of the '6 Capitals'
10:45am - Tea break
11:00am - Themes, unconference style
12:45pm - Lunch
1:30pm - Get in to working groups (if not already in a team) and start working on prototypes
5.00pm - Finish for the day

Wednesday 17 July

8:30am - Arrival and check-in
9:00am - Update on the hackathon, asking for help
9:30am - Continue working on prototypes and ideas
10:45am - Tea break
1:00pm - Lunch
3:00pm - Show & Tell of prototypes, ideas, etc
4:00pm - Finish

Why does this matter? Why should you get involved? How would you - or others - benefit from this? By showing what is possible with open data, we can demonstrate the value of working in the open and how this not only builds great products or services, but can build better societies by providing the means to citizen engagement.
