Professor Paul Dieppe will outline his own exploration of the world of healing and healers, related to his background in biomedicine

Healing is being talked about a great deal at the moment. We are told that we need to heal ourselves and heal our world. But what is healing?How can we investigate something so varied, nebulous and experiential? And why do science and medicine mostly reject healing?Paul Dieppe is part of a group of academics exploring these questions. People who investigate healing come from a variety of different subject areas, including anthropology, religious studies, sociology, medicine, psychology and many arts and humanities disciplines.The group aim to help break down the ‘silos’ of academia to develop a genuinely trans-disciplinary consortium to take the subject forward – and develop an academic discipline called ‘healing matters’. They may need to focus on specific issues to begin with, such as ‘dying healed’, or the development of ‘healing spaces’.

S﻿peakers<a href="https://medicine.exeter.ac.uk/people/profile/index.php?web_id=Paul_Dieppe" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">P﻿rofessor Paul Dieppe</a>qualified as a doctor in London in 1970. He specialized in rheumatology and became ARC professor of rheumatology in Bristol in 1987, and then Dean of the Bristol Faculty of Medicine between 1994 and 1997. He then switched to health services research and was the Director of the MRC Health Services Research Collaboration between 1997 and 2007. After that he spent a short time at the University of Exeter before moving to the Peninsular Medical School to work in clinical education research.With the formation of the new Exeter Medical School, he then took on the new role of Professor of Health and Wellbeing, and is working on setting up a network of people in and around Exeter with academic interests in health and wellbeing.Paul is currently writing a book on healing.<a href="https://wcceh.org/meet-the-team/friends/ayesha-nathoo/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Ayesha Nathoo </a>is a medical humanities scholar affiliated to the Wellcome Centre, following a Wellcome Trust Research Fellowship in the Centre for Medical History at the University of Exeter. She is also an affiliate of the Department of History and Philosophy of Science, University of Cambridge, where she gained her PhD, and has held Fellowships at the Science Museum, London, and Clare Hall, University of Cambridge. Her areas of expertise include the history of modern medicine, health and wellbeing, and science and medical communication. She was a collaborator with the Hubbub group, the first residents of the Hub at Wellcome, studying notions of rest and busyness in contemporary urban living, and is a keen advocate of trans-disciplinary research that engages with diverse public audiences. Her current research focuses on the contexts and practices of holistic healthcare and healing. <a href="https://www.bsms.ac.uk/about/contact-us/staff/natalie-harriman.aspx" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">N﻿atalie Harriman</a> is a scientist by training (PhD Developmental Neurobiology) and a homoeopath by vocation (Licentiate Homoeopathy) which she has attempted to integrate through her interests in philosophy (MA Applied Ethics) and spirituality. She currently works at King’s College London in research ethics &amp; integrity, practices homoeopathy from home and tries to write papers about healing. Her academic research is focused on understanding how the new ideas on ‘wholes’ and emergence, arising out of complexity theory and studies in consciousness and brain functioning will challenge the dominance of our current reductionist, materialist world view. Data arising out of studies in ethnomedicine and western alternative medical practices as well as ancient, pre-Enlightenment philosophical and spiritual ideas, emerging from the field of western esotericism will both assist and complement this work. Her homoeopathic practice is focused on helping people who have realised the need for paradigmatic change in their own lives and how serious traumatic life changes can be viewed as opportunities for life renewal, personal growth and eventually the giving back to society – essentially the search for meaning.
