Hedge Planting at Lower Chew Forest

Hedge Planting at Lower Chew Forest

Lower Chew Forest - Wick FarmBristol, England
Tuesday, Feb 3, 2026 from 10 am to 3 pm GMT
Overview

Help us plant new hedgerows as part of the ambitious Lower Chew Forest project managed by Avon Needs Trees

Avon Needs Trees purchased Wick Farm with the aim to create Lower Chew Forest; the South West's largest woodland in a generation.

Much of this land will be planted as a forest, whilst other parts will remain farmed.

This winter we will be helping them plant up to 1.4km hedgerow, much of which was ripped out post-WW11. This will connect up existing hedgerow and extend a vital wildlife corridor.

If you have not joined one of our sessions before, please register as a volunteer by clicking the link at the bottom of the page.

Directions

To reach the site there is a turning off Rankers lane, just North of Hunstrete. Follow the road and park at the first set of barns where we will be meeting. What3words: ///losing.thrashing.fillers.

The nearest postcode is BS39 4NU. Please be aware that the postcode covers a large area so its best to follow the W3W or Google Maps link above.

Please note the toilet facility avaliable will be a compost loo in a shed or tent.

About Hedgerow Heroes

At CPRE Avon and Bristol we have an ambition to create/restore 10km hedgerow by CPRE’s centenary year in 2026. Over the last 3 years we have achieved 5.85km of our target, which wouldn’t have been possible without the fantastic work of volunteers. This winter our Hedgerow Heroes project continues to grow bigger and better, now taking place across the counties of South Gloucestershire, Bath and North East Somerset, and North Somerset.

Planting and restoring hedgerows can prevent soil erosion, increase biodiversity by providing wildlife habitat for many species of birds, insects, butterflies and small mammals and can increase the overall aesthetic appeal of a landscape.

We still need your help!

Register as a volunteer to recieve details on upcoming activities, and join us to help improve hedgerows across the South West. If this event is your first time volunteering with CPRE, please Click here to register as a volunteer.
