HelmUK was the world’s first HGV platooning trials to take place in a live commercial operating environment, to quantify the fuel saving and reduced emissions benefits in a real world deployment.Three lorries were specially adapted with platooning technology which enabled them to travel in a platoon, with speed and braking of following lorries reacting to the actions of the lead lorry. The technology allows the space between the lorries to be substantially decreased without increasing the risk to other road users.The results of this trial will be showcased at the Plexal innovation centre within the Here East campus at London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on Thursday 14th July, the event will be hosted by BBC’s Technology &amp; Science correspondent Richard Westcott, and will see industry experts and members of the consortium discuss the project’s achievements and the implications of the findings for the road freight industry and for road operators – as well as the value of the trial results in the context of the wider transport automation and decarbonisation agendas.<ul><li>Starting at 12.30 with a buffet lunch</li><li>Presentations &amp; demonstrations from 1pm</li><li>Networking drinks from 5pm</li></ul>Speakers include :<ul><li>Carl Hergart, Chief Engineer, Leyland DAF</li></ul><ul><li>Siobhan Campbell, Deputy Chief Scientific Advisor, Department for Transport</li></ul><ul><li>Dr Joanne White, Road Development Director, National Highways</li></ul><ul><li>Steve Gooding, Director, RAC Foundation</li></ul><ul><li>Phil Earl, Deputy Director – International Vehicle Standards, Department for Transport</li></ul>
