Unlocking the Potential of Young Lives Longitudinal Research to Build Climate Resilience in the Global South

The climate crisis is increasing both the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events and is already affecting many aspects of young people’s lives, with those living in the poorest households being hardest hit, particularly women and girls. Despite growing attention to the immediate effects of climate change on disadvantaged communities, population-based evidence on the long-term and intergenerational impacts is very scarce.Our expert speakers will include:<ul><li>Dr Neven Fučkar, University of Oxford</li><li>R. Jisung Park, University of Pennsylvania</li><li>Sarah Lane Smith, Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office</li><li>David Kerr, The Africa Oxford Initiative</li><li>Benjamin Schachter, United Nations Human Rights</li><li>Nathanael Bevan, Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office</li></ul>The panel will present existing evidence showing the profound impacts of early exposure to environmental and weather shocks on children’s development - disrupting their nutritional health, physical growth, cognitive skills and learning outcomes – with long-term consequences in adulthood and effects even extending to the next generation. The panel will showcase, the power of matching environmental data to longitudinal cohort studies, such as Young Lives, and illustrate the ambitions and value added of the recently launched <a href="https://www.younglives.org.uk/sites/default/files/2024-10/Climate_change_hub_Sept_2024.pdf" title="https://www.younglives.org.uk/sites/default/files/2024-10/Climate_change_hub_Sept_2024.pdf" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Young Lives Hub on Climate Change and Environmental Shocks</a>. The Hub’s mission is to generate ground-breaking evidence on the long-term and intergenerational impacts of extreme weather events, worsening air pollution and rising temperatures on vulnerable young people in the Global South. It will create the first-ever globally comparable dataset linking one of the most recognised and longstanding longitudinal studies to external climate datasets, including rainfall data and NASA’s air pollution and temperature data.Understanding the life-course and intergenerational impacts of environmental extremes in the Global South, and identifying solutions to mitigate these impacts, build resilience, and empower the next generation, are urgent questions at the core of the Young Lives Hub and driving this panel discussion.
