About this event

  • Event lasts 6 hours

This hands-on workshop will explore how using modular design, alongside cost-effective microcomputers, such as Raspberry Pi’s, can create accessible, scalable, and repairable tech that can transform storytelling in museums and heritage spaces.

The session is based on work to rebuild ‘Queer Codebreakers 2.0’, an interactive museum piece currently part of the Queer the Pier exhibition at the Brighton and Hove Museum, and as such is grounded in a real-world example. Queer Codebreakers 1.0 began in 2018 as a collaboration with artist Elle Castle and has evolved into an ongoing exploration of how to make queer oral history, heritage, and stories accessible.

As an introductory session, no prior knowledge is required. In the session you will gain practical skills in:

· Using and working with a raspberry pi

· Working With Godot

· Understanding circuitry and circuit boards

· Extending Raspberry Pi’s

· Creating your own projects

The session is divided into 4 sections: Overview of Queer Codebreakers; Hands on Pi; Hands on Pi Buttons; Making an Interface in Godot. Facilators include members of the Sussex Digital Humanities Lab, Dr Sharon Webb, Dr Nic Symour-Smyth, Alex Peverett, as well as the lead software developer for Queer Hertiage South and Queer Codebreakers 3.0, Riaz Thompson.

While the workshop is primarily aimed at community heritage volunteers, managers, and curators, as well as heritage professionals, the workshop is open to anyone who would like to learn more about building DIY solutions for interactive museum objects.

Places are limited, so registration essential, and if you can no longer attend, we ask that you let us know in advance so we can offer your place to someone else.

Lunch provided, and small travel bursaries available.
