Hip Hop & Sci Fi Writing Workshop

MFestis the UK’s first ever festival of Muslim literature, cultures and ideas, It will be a place to engage with Muslim writers and artists from a range of backgrounds and disciplines including literature, visual arts, music, theatre, poetry and dance. The festival includes family events, interactive workshops, panel discussions and performances.Central to MFest is contemporary writing and ideas with an international view, as well as topical discussions about identity, race and global politics. We encourage challenging conversations that explore the rich diversity of Muslim opinions from a multitude of Islamic traditions.

A writing workshop using Hip Hop, Sci-fi, and all your imagination!

Join Amahra Spence, the founder of <a href="https://www.maiagroup.co/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">MAIA </a>and <a href="https://www.yardarthouse.co/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">YARD </a>for a sci-fi writing workshop, using hip hop as a prompt to explore &#x27;place&#x27;, dystopia/utopia and speculative futures. If the Hip Hop tradition is rooted in social critique of its environment, how might we take this knowledge and creativity to draw upon alternative possibilities? How do we nurture the power of imagination to think about &#x27;place&#x27; for ourselves and future generations?Join us! This event will take place online and is free to attend. In 2013, she co-founded MAIA, an arts and social justice organisation, with a vision of a world in which artists are seen as powerful decision-makers in how systems and structures work and where the manifestations of systemic change are recognised as art. MAIA&#x27;s mission is to redefine what it means to be an artist, challenge who gets to make their dreams real, and invest in the transformative possibilities of the Black imagination. 
In 2020, Amahra started the Black Land and Spatial Justice Project to celebrate and resource the ingenuity, wisdoms and resilience of Black practitioners organising and working for liberation with our natural, built and virtual environments.
