Terrence Higgins Trust

Over 35,000 people aged 50 and over are living with HIV in the UK, making up more than a third of all people accessing HIV care. With an ageing population and over 1,000 new HIV diagnoses every year in people aged 50 and over, this number is set to increase.
With this in mind, how HIV aware are you and your organisation?
Do you know how HIV is transmitted? Data from the National AIDS Trust (NAT) suggests that only 45% of the public can correctly identify all the routes of HIV transmission.(HIV Public Knowledge and Attitudes Report – NAT, 2014) 
Would you feel confident about supporting someone living with HIV? Misconceptions about HIV can cause fear which may lead to discriminatory treatment of people living with HIV. An online survey conducted by Terrence Higgins Trust found that 74% of people living with HIV, aged 55 and over, experienced stigma as a result of their HIV status. Many people living with HIV fear accessing healthcare or going into care because they think they will be treated badly by staff or residents who hold stigmatised views about HIV. 
Are you fully aware of the rights people living with HIV have under law? People living with HIV are protected by a number of pieces of legislation with regards to how they should be treated and disclosure of their status.
Terrence Higgins Trust invite you to a workshop which will address some of these questions and discuss what it means to grow older with HIV, and what you can do to ensure you are ready to support the needs of people living with HIV who are, and will be, accessing care.
The workshop will cover the difference between HIV and AIDS, how HIV is transmitted, debunk some myths about HIV, plus what to consider when supporting somone living with HIV. 
This event will be a great opportunity to learn about HIV and ageing, meet colleagues from across a variety of sectors and plan what we can do, together, to ensure people growing older with HIV in the UK have the opportunity to age well.

This event is aimed at people who feel that they have little or outdated knowledge of HIV and is open to anyone supporting or working with older people living with HIV.
