Hockney Between the Covers: an intimate look at David Hockney’s Illustrations for Fourteen Poems from C.P. Cavafy (1966)

This event will throw off the covers of David Hockney’s Illustrations for Fourteen Poems from C.P. Cavafy (1966) and invite attendees to delve into the beautiful prints and poems on queer love and desire contained within.

 

Join Dr Allan Madden for a close look at this beautiful example of Hockney’s illustrated books from The Hunterian’s collection. The work will be discussed in the context of Hockney’s depictions of queer domestic scenes and representations of queer home life before, during and after the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in England and Wales in 1967. There will also be readings from the book: the poetry of Constantine P. Cavafy, an early 20th century Greek poet, whose work celebrates the sensuality and emotion of same sex love.

 

The event will also give attendees the opportunity to learn about LGBTQ+ Collections, a project at the University of Glasgow involving The Hunterian, Archives &amp; Special Collections, student volunteers and members of the University of Glasgow’s LGBTQ+ community. The aim of the project is to increase the LGBTQ+ presence across the University’s heritage collections and programming in physical and digital spaces.
