Housing Support and Self-directed Support

Housing Support services are provided to vulnerable people, with the goal of improving their quality of life by providing a stable environment to enable independent living.The aim of the Unit is to offer support and assistance to providers of housing support in the voluntary, private and Registered Social Landlord sectors.

Housing Support Enabling Unit

Individuals and organisations from across Scotland have been working hard to implement self-directed support as Scotland’s mainstream approach to social care since 2010.
The Social Care (Self-directed Support) (Scotland) Act 2013 made self-directed support (SDS) a legal right for everyone receiving social care and is based on the following principles for supported people: involvement, choice, control, the right to be treated with dignity and to participate in society. Implementation of SDS is a major culture shift and systems change for everyone working in social care but great progress has already been made. The Scottish Government’s Self-directed Support Policy Team is now working on developing a new national implementation plan for self-directed support which will identify the priorities and actions to take forward over the next couple of years.
This event will be an opportunity for housing support providers and others to hear from Scottish Government about the progress made so far with SDS implementation and to discuss and provide feedback on their proposed Change Map for SDS. They will also hear from a housing support provider, ARK Housing, who are working to embed the SDS principles and personalised support throughout their services.
Speakers will include:
Karen Geekie, Self-directed Support Policy Lead, Health and Social Care Directorate, Scottish Government – who will share about the SDS Change Map for the development of the national implementation plan for SDS. 
Nikki Fildes, Self-Directed Support Development Manager, ARK Housing – who will share about the work which ARK Housing have been doing making SDS and personalisation work for people receiving housing support.
Tea, coffee and registration will be available from 1.15pm and the event will start at 1.30pm.
