Course content: Hoverflies (Syrphidae) are probably the most recorded and popular family of Diptera (True Flies) with over 280 British species. Many of these attractive insects can be identified in the field although the majority need to be examined under a microscope. This course will be aimed at people with little or no experience of hoverflies. However, it is hoped that more experienced attendees will learn additional information about them, their collection and identification.The one-day workshop will begin with an introductory presentation/talk outlining the ecology of hoverflies and currently available identification resources. This will be followed by laboratory practice in the use of microscopes and identification using dichotomous keys. Specimens from the World Museum's collection will be used for this purpose, although attendees are welcome to bring along their own for identification. If time and weather permits, it may be possible to collect (and identify) some in the wildflower garden at the front of the museum. At the end of the day, it is hoped that everyone attending will have gained valuable experience in identifying hoverflies to at least tribe/genus level.Tutor information: Glenn Rostron is the county hoverfly recorder for Cheshire and Lancashire (vice-counties 58,59 and 60). He is an amateur entomologist and arachnologist who specialises in various groups of diptera, hymenoptera and arachnids. He has been studying hoverflies for a decade, having first become fascinated by them after attending a presentation on them which was given, as part of his MSc Biological Recording course, by Stuart Ball and Roger Morris who jointly run the national Hoverfly Recording Scheme.Covid MeasuresIn order to keep our attendees and staff safe we encourage anyone attending our workshops to:- maintain social distancing (numbers will be limited to enable social distancing).- wear a face covering when in a shared indoor space (unless exempt)- clean/sanitise their hands regularly.- take a Covid-19 lateral flow test before arrival.AccessThere are lifts between each of the floors and assistance dogs are permitted.Adults only (18+)
