Quantum computing is now with us. For many years it was not even clear whether such machines could even be built. Quantum computers work in a fundamentally different way from conventional computers (PCs, laptops, and even supercomputers). Conventional computers use a Von Neumann architecture where a CPU executes instructions on data. The data are represented in classical bits which are either 0 or 1. Quantum computers exploit quantum mechanical phenomena to perform computation albeit in a much faster rate than conventional computers. The classical bits used in conventional computers can only have two values: 0 or 1. The qubits (quantum bits) used in quantum computers can be in multiple states at the same time. This phenomenon, known as superposition, and another phenomenon called quantum entanglement, are what make quantum computers much faster than conventional computers. In recent years many people have become very excited about quantum computers. In theory, quantum computers would help us solve, or approximate, difficult computational problems that are beyond the reach of even the most powerful supercomputers. One area that will be affected by quantum computing is cryptography. Adversaries who have access to a powerful quantum computer will be able to jeopardize modern cryptographic systems and be able to decrypt ‘secure’ data without knowledge of the keys used for encryption. Digital signatures, as well as important internet protocols such as HTTPS (TLS) that are used for secure browsing, online banking, and eCommerce will be affected.
