A practical step-by-step guide to meadow creation, restoration and management with meadows specialist Matt Pitts.

Matt Pitts is Plantlife’s very experienced meadows specialist who advises landowners and farmers on the best ways to create and manage meadows. This talk will be a step-by-step guide on how to restore, create and manage a wildflower meadow. The talk is primarily for those who have a field or paddock and would like a meadow plus those who already have one and would like to know a lot more - everything from finding out about key soil requirements for successful meadow restoration to learning about positive indicator plants. This talk will also appeal to anyone wanting to know how to turn their lawn into a flowering meadow as the methods are similar. Retired farmer Philip Hamley of Lethytep will be joining the talk to share how he successfully restored several fields to stunning wildflower meadows using green hay. Wildflower meadows are among the most important wildlife habitats in the UK as they support substantial numbers of plant and animal species. Yet only fragments of them remain, largely due to changes in agriculture during the 20th century. The good news is they can be restored or created on farmland, in gardens and churchyards and on roadside verges. Matt will also outline how wildflower meadows could fit into the government&#x27;s new Environmental Land Management Scheme, which will be of interest to landowners and farmers.A Question &amp; Answer session will follow with Matt and Philip.Matt Pitts is Plantlife’s Meadows adviser, supporting a wide range of landowners up and down the UK. Matt is a third-generation farmer&#x27;s son. He spent his formative years working on mixed farms in Kent and Sussex. Matt&#x27;s career in practical conservation started in his mid-twenties within the Kent County Countryside Management Service. Matt then worked for 15 years within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Over the years Matt has advised both private and public landowners of all sizes. In his role in protected landscapes he advised and helped farmers to access agri-environments schemes to support meadow management and grassland restoration.This event is organised by Moor Meadows. We are a not-for-profit organisation, run by volunteers passionate about meadows and nature. Our mission is to celebrate the wonderful diversity of native plants and wildlife to be found in species-rich grasslands and to help reverse the trend of wildlife declines.This talk is free, but if you can afford a donation, between £2.50 and £10, this will go towards supporting the work of Moor Meadows. Any funds go entirely towards providing events with top speakers, helping with the running costs of our website and supporting the newly established Devon wide meadows network, the Meadow-Makers&#x27; Forum.
