Spike Island supports, produces and presents contemporary art and culture across an 80,000 square foot former industrial building in Bristol. Its diverse artistic programme includes free major exhibitions, events and engagement activities taking place on-site and online. Championing outstanding work by emerging and underrepresented local, national and international artists, the programme enhances access to contemporary art for audiences from all backgrounds.Alongside its public offer, Spike Island directly supports artists through new commissions, over 70 subsidised studios, and sector-leading artist development opportunities that widen access to its programme and facilities. Its Exhibition Services business supports the bespoke production and installation of artists’ film and video throughout the UK and internationally. Spike Island is home to a dynamic community of hundreds of artists and creative businesses, working in flexible, affordable workspaces, alongside UWE Bristol’s Fine Art department, Spike Print Studio, and café bar Emmeline.

Join sound artist Kathy Hinde for a playful, hands-on session exploring audio feedback, on the occasion of Spike Island’s exhibition <a href="https://www.spikeisland.org.uk/programme/exhibitions/olukemi-lijadu/" title="https://www.spikeisland.org.uk/programme/exhibitions/olukemi-lijadu/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Olukemi Lijadu: Feedback</a>.Participants will start by constructing a simple self-oscillating circuit to generate tones and pulses, before exploring how feedback changes in response to different resonant spaces.The workshop will culminate with a collaborative ‘happening’ based on Steve Reich’s classic text score, Pendulum Music – using microphones, guitar amps and audio effects pedals to construct a kinetic feedback instrument.This workshop is open to all ages and abilities, and all equipment is provided.Please note: Some sections of this session may feature loud sound / noises. Earplugs will be available. I Am Making ArtThese regular activity sessions are led by artists and visual practitioners. Visitors of all ages and abilities can try out new techniques and approaches to making art, from drawing and painting to collage, sculpture and animation. All materials are provided. Kathy HindeKathy Hinde is an interdisciplinary artist who creates installations, performances and site specific experiences aiming to nurture a deeper and more embodied connection to the more-than-human world.Composed of hand-made objects, electronics and a blend of digital and analogue systems, her work represents a cross between kinetic sound sculptures and newly invented musical instruments. She creates pieces in response to specific locations and frequently works in collaboration with other practitioners and scientists, often actively involving the audience in the creative process.Kathy has toured work across Europe, USA, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Russia, China, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Colombia, Australia and New Zealand. Awards include an Ivor Novello Award, an Honorary Mention at Prix Ars Electronica, a British Composer Award, an ORAM award and a Scottish Award for New Music. Kathy received an Honorary Doctorate in music from Bath Spa University and is a member of Bristol Experimental Expanded Film (BEEF).
