Artist, Suman Gujral and Poet, Rhiya Pau, met when Arachne Press chose Suman’s Story Plate for the cover of Rhiya’s poetry collection<a href="https://arachnepress.com/shop/Routes-by-Rhiya-Pau-p469636007" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> Routes</a>. Both are inspired by their families’ journeys and the diaspora more generally.Join them for a poetry reading, art sharing, discussion of where their work intersects, and a short hands-on workshop making poetry boats, which you can take home, or leave to be displayed in the gallery.You might want to bring a favourite pen, relevant newspaper articles or family photos printed onto (both sides of) paper that will easily fold.People often get confused with this venue: it is the Stephen Lawrence GALLERY on Stockwell Street, not the SL Centre or Building!

During her MA, Suman’s research into the history of printmaking in India revealed the impact of the 1947 Partition of India on all aspects of life on the sub-continent and on her own family’s history which inspired a deeper interest in the effect of local and global traumas on individuals and communities. This led to Suman’s current work on the migrant crisis and its roots. These issues can be painful to think about but she believes that artists are in a unique position to act as agents for change by provoking conversations through their work. Suman make abstract work, stemming from her own response but which can be interpreted by the viewer from their own perspective.

Rhiya Pau is a British-born poet of Indian heritage from a community with a rich history of migration. She is one half of Origins Poetry Duo, who host multi-disciplinary fundraisers, platforming emerging artists of the global majority and is a member of the Poets for Partition collective. Rhiya was the winner of the 2021 Creative Future Writers’ Award. Her debut poetry collection, Routes, won an Eric Gregory Award from the Society of Authors earlier this year.Rhiya’s poem, Departure Lounge appeared in the anthology, Where We Find Ourselves. The poem led to our publishing Rhiya’s debut collection, Routes, in November 2022, commemorating fifty years since her family moved to the UK.
