Masterclass: Implementation of Riyaz in Bandishes

In this Masterclass Dheerendra will be teaching some basic and important but neglected technical aspects of Kathak dance which are very essential to retain this dance form in long term. Dheerendra will be focusing on the technical aspects of Riyaz (practice) in Kathak and its execution through the Bandishes (a fixed, melodic composition in Hindustani vocal or instrumental music).

Dheerendra Tiwari

Dheerendra Tiwari’s illustrious career has been shaped under the tutelage of the maestro Pt Rajendra Gangani, whose living legacy generations to come will seek inspiration from. Equally distinguishable in his art are the footprints of the internationally acclaimed Guru Aditi Mangaldas, who taught him how to bear the flame of Kathak without marring its poetry.

Dheerendra has worked with the great Gurus and leading choreographers of India, including Geetanjali Lal, Aditi Mangaldas, Leela Samson, Saroja Vaidyanathan and Kumudini Lakhia. A recipient of the coveted scholarships from Sahitya Kala Parishad and Kathak Kendra, he has also served as the senior faculty of Bharatiya Kala Kendra, Mandi House, New Delhi. He has worked as a senior repertory member and rehearsal director for Drishtikon Dance Foundation – The Aditi Mangaldas Dance Company and as a rehearsal director with Aakash Odedra Dance Company. His performances for prestigious festivals in India and abroad including the Khajuraho Festival, Kathak Mahotsav, Darbar Festival (London), Edinburgh International Dance Festival (Scotland), and Oz Asia Dance Festival (Australia) brought him wide acclaim as performer.

Through his recently formed institution ‘SamDheer Foundation’, he aims to nurture the next generation of dancers wholly dedicated to serving Kathak as their highest destiny.
