The Turing Way Fireside Chat series features people, ideas and projects in open and reproducible research.

On 5 May, 14:00-15:30 London time (UTC+1) (<a href="https://arewemeetingyet.com/London/2023-05-05/14:00" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">in your timezone</a>): the next Fireside Chat will take place on "Implementing open science at scale".Facilitated by Chelle Gentemann, Programme Scientist for NASA's Transform to OPen Science (TOPS) mission with The Turing Way co-lead Malvika Sharan, this panel will feature insights from Ana Persic (UNESCO Open Science), Nokuthula Mchunu (National Research Foundation, Africa Open Science Platform), Steve Crawford (NASA) and Alex Mendonça (SciELO Brasil). These individuals and community leaders represent different open science efforts addressing the challenges and implementation of open science in Brazil, Africa, the USA and more broadly through cross-country collaborations (read their bios below).Recommendations, infrastructures, expert services, policies, government buy-in, grassroots advocacies or combinations of several of these -- what has worked in different geographical contexts? Highlighting these initiatives led and facilitated by our speakers, we will discuss the convening role of UNESCO, 25 years of SciELO's open access efforts, 5 years of pan African Open Science Platform and the 2023 NASA's 'Year of Open Science' to drive the implementation of open science at various scales.We will also facilitate open discussions with attendees to learn about their perspectives on the topic via a shared document (links shared upon registration).This event is being co-hosted by <a href="https://the-turing-way.netlify.app/welcome" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Turing Way</a> - a community-led handbook on data science and research and <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/open-science/transform-to-open-science" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">TOPS</a> - part of NASA’s Open-Source Science Initiative designed to rapidly transform agencies, organizations, and communities to an inclusive culture of open science.The Fireside Chat series features experts, champions and their projects from across different international communities in reproducibility, open research, ethics, collaboration and everything in between. <h2>About the speakers and facilitators</h2>Dr Nokuthula Mchunu is the Deputy Director for the <a href="https://aosp.org.za/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Africa Open Science Platform</a> hosted by the National Research Foundation, South Africa. Dr Mchunu has a wealth of experience in academia outreach programmes, the popularisation of science, and STEM with local communities. She was senior Researcher from the Agricultural Research Council of South Africa in the Biotechnology Platform. She completed her doctoral degree in fungal genomics, was previously a senior scholar in the Department of Biotechnology of Durban University of Technology for more than 15 years. She has also served as a scientist in a number of international institutions including the University of Cincinnati (USA), Lund University (Sweden), Tianjin University, (China) and the Centre for Chemical Biology (Malaysia). She is the first recipient of the Young Scientist Programme between China and South Africa. Her research focused on Covid and pathogen surveillance in wastewater, fungal genetics, Cannabis and Africa legume genomics. Dr Steve Crawford is an astronomer currently working as the Lead for the <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/open-science-overview/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Open Source Science Initiative </a>for the <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Science Mission Directorate of NASA</a>. Previously, he managed the teams maintaining the open source calibration software for the Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes. Before that, he spent 11 years working as the Data Manager for the Southern African Large Telescope at the South African Astronomical Observatory. One of the main components of the Open Source Science Initiative is the NASA TOPS project – an initiative to spark change and inspire open science through engagement with the Earth and Space Science communities through events and activities to make science more accessible, inclusive, and reproducible. Alex Mendonça has been working at <a href="https://scielo.org/en/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">SciELO Brazil</a> <a href="https://blog.scielo.org/en/2022/09/29/scielo-25-years-open-science-with-ideia/#.ZEbxORXMKrM" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"></a> for 16 years and is part of its Coordination Board since 2014. He has a degree in Digital Media with emphasis in Interface Design by the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo. In 2017, Alex joined the Technical Committee of Public Knowledge Project (PKP), the initiative behind Open Journal System (OJS). Alex has 14 years experience in training SciELO journals with online submission systems and teaching best practices about scientific publishing. He is a co-organiser of <a href="https://blog.scielo.org/en/2022/09/29/scielo-25-years-open-science-with-ideia/#.ZEbxORXMKrM" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">SciELO 25 Years</a>: Open Science with IDEIA – Impact, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility.Dr Ana Peršić is Programme Specialist at the Section of Science Technology Innovation Policy at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. Ecologist by training (Master in Ecological Sciences at the University of Padova, Italy and PhD in Ecotoxicology at the University of Paris South, France), Dr Ana Peršić joined UNESCO in April 2006 as an assistant program specialist serving the UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere program within the Division of Ecological and Earth Sciences. She has then served as Science Specialist at the UNESCO Liaison Office in New York from 2011 to 2018. Her work relates to strengthening the science-policy interface and the promotion of science technology and innovation in the implementation of the United Nations 2030 agenda for sustainable development and the sustainable development goals (SDGs). She coordinated the development of the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science and is currently working towards its implementation.<h2>About the facilitators and hosting projects</h2>Dr Chelle Gentemann is an advocate for open science, open source software, and inclusivity. As a computational physical oceanographer focused on remote sensing, she has worked for over 25 years on retrievals of ocean temperature from space and using that data to understand how the ocean impacts our lives. She is the Programme Scientist for the <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/open-science/transform-to-open-science" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Transform to Open Science (TOPS)</a> mission and the 2023 Year of Open Science. Chelle maintains an open by default policy for all her research, teaching, and speaking resources, and her code is all freely available, with a permissive license, online.NASA’s<a href="https://science.nasa.gov/open-science/transform-to-open-science" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> TOPS</a> mission is to create a scientific culture that is ready for 21st century challenges. It’s a 5 year journey that will: (1) accelerate major scientific discoveries, (2) broaden participation by historically excluded communities and (3) increase understanding and adoption of open science principles and techniques.Dr Malvika Sharan is a senior researcher for the Tools, Practices and Systems research programme at The Alan Turing Institute, London. With a focus on Open Research, she leads the Research <a href="https://www.turing.ac.uk/research/research-programmes/tools-practices-and-systems/community-management-and-open-research" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Community Management Team</a> and co-leads <a href="https://the-turing-way.netlify.app/welcome" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Turing Way</a> - a project that aims to make data science reproducible, collaborative, ethical and inclusive for researchers around the globe. She is an active contributor to several open science cmmunity projects and a co-founder of OLS (Open Life Science), a mentoring and training programme in open science.The Turing Way is an open source, open collaboration, and community-driven handbook on Data Science. We involve and support a diverse community of contributors to make research and data science accessible, comprehensible and effective for everyone. Our goal is to provide all the information that researchers and data scientists in academia, industry and the public sector need to ensure that the projects they work on are easy to reproduce and reuse. The Turing Way book currently hosts five guides and a Community Handbook with over 300 live pages as chapters and subchapters on best practices, co-developed by 425 contributors on <a href="https://github.com/alan-turing-institute/the-turing-way" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">GitHub</a>.For more information, or to express your interest to join as a speaker or host, please reach out to The Turing Way team by emailing theturingway@gmail.com.
