Import procedures (Face to face in Durham)
Our Trade Ready Training courses are aimed at helping you become trade compliant no matter where you are on your export journey.
In 2025, the UK imported over £620 billion worth of goods. Behind every import is a customs declaration, documentation, duty, import VAT, origin questions and more.
During this face to face, full-day, interactive, British Chamber of Commerce accredited course, we will dive into all areas of the import procedure to ensure that your business is compliant yet not overpaying on duty. Across six-hours we will provide you with:
- Key considerations which any business should consider when purchasing from a third country
- An understanding of the key documents that are integral when importing goods
- An overview of different documents, certificates and licences that may be required
- Knowledge on the information that is needed to complete an import declaration and how you can review an import declaration
- An overview of Incoterms, commodity codes and origin
- An appreciation of the importance of customs valuations and how your goods should be valued
- An understanding of the process for claiming preferential treatment
- Knowledge on how to calculate the amount of import VAT and duty which you will be charged
-An introduction to returned goods relief and customs special procedures including inward processing, outward processing, customs warehousing, and temporary admission
Light lunch will be provided.
Accreditation:
Following the course you will receive a multiple-choice exam which, upon completion and passing, you will receive your British Chamber of Commerce Accredited Certificate for this module.
On completion of six BCC Accredited modules, you will earn the BCC Foundation Award in International Trade. Gaining this widely recognised award demonstrates compliance and knowledge which can have positive repercussions for both yourself and your business.
The other courses within the BCC Foundation Award are:

- Commodity Codes & the UK Trade Tariff
- Incoterms
- Rules of Origin
- Export documentation
-Agents & Distributors
- Customs Procedures
-Benefitting from Inward & Outward Processing Relief
