Aim:

To increase professional understanding and work to improve the experience of autistic and/or ADHD men when engaging with domestic abuse perpetrator programmes

Learning outcomes:

  • understanding of how domestic abuse perpetration and neurodivergence intersect
  • learn about the barriers autistic and/or ADHD men experience when accessing domestic abuse perpetrator programmes
  • learn about the barriers autistic and/or ADHD men experience to engaging in domestic abuse perpetrator programmes
  • learn about the challenges practitioners face in providing neuroinclusive interventions
  • obtain some practical tips on how to make programmes more accessible
  • hear about the neurodiversity practitioner toolkit (currently being developed in partnership with Respect, Probation North East, Criminal Justice Scotland and neurodivergent-led organisations)

About Dr Nicole Renehan:

Dr Nicole Renehan is an Assistant Professor in Criminology in the Department of Sociology, Durham University. She is also a member of Durham University's Centre for Research into Violence and Abuse (CRiVA) and the Centre for Neurodiversity and Development. Nicole researches in the area of domestic abuse, Neurodiversity and Interventions, and has a practice background in domestic abuse within a multi-agency, child protection setting. Nicole also has experience working with young men who have offended in secure settings and disabled/neurodivergent children and young people who are in distress.

Callum Buntrock, Head of Service for Equation’s perpetrator workstream, will join Dr Renehan to give an overview of the Your Choice Project, Nottinghamshire’s voluntary behavioural change programme for perpetrators. He will offer an opportunity to ask questions about local approaches to perpetrator intervention, reflecting on the research by Dr Renehan.
