<P><SPAN>Conversations in real life can be relaxed chats about T.V., confiding in a friend about your troubles or arguing with a sibling – as everyday as eating or sleeping. In games, conversations are being featured more often as stories are held in higher regard... And while some are just as mundane as in real life, most of the time you're asking a character to give you something (information, items, a romantic cutscene) or making a choice with grave consequences. Why is there such a disconnect between our everyday experience of conversations, and the ones we see in games? To answer this, we'll talk about chats that are in games, that aren't in games (yet), and share some of our experiences designing and developing dialogue in games.</SPAN></P>
<P><EM>Florencia Minuzzi is the writer and co-founder of Tea-Powered Games. After years of researching the ins-and-outs of a particular gene in baker’s yeast, she decided to follow her other passion, writing for videogames. Starting with Dialogue: A Writer's Story and now Elemental Flow, her work focuses on everyday conversations, personal interactions (and more accurate portrayals of scientific research!)</EM></P>

<P><SPAN>Over the course of his career Nicoll has turned his almost pathological dislike for hard work into a winning business strategy. Using a variety of scientifically unproven anecdotes, poorly thought out examples, and wishful thinking Nicoll will show you the positive side of doing the bare minimum required.</SPAN></P>
<P><EM>Nicoll Hunt has worked on everything from solo teams to 250-person teams, from games with zero budget to titles that cost over $110,000,000 (and destroyed a company in the process). A grizzled veteran of AAA he is now a perpetually rising star in the indie scene. Nicoll's studio I Fight Bears has found critical and commercial success with a number of titles including multi-platform time-travelling-lumberjack-em-up FIST OF AWESOME, smashy-crashy-explode-em-up MAXIMUM CAR, and upcoming drinky-drinky-booze-em-up BREW TOWN.</EM></P>

<P>Video games have always drawn inspiration from boardgames, card games and RPGs, but we can learn lessons and techniques from tabletop design to let us create playable prototypes before we've written a line of code. James Wallis takes us through the process.</P>
<P><EM>James Wallis has been a cross-discipline games designer for over 25 years. He lectures in game design and narrative at London South Bank University, and runs the international Game Design Masterclasses.</EM></P>

<H3>"Working with actors – a developer’s tool kit"</H3>
<P>Indie developers are often expected to be able to find, cast and direct actors without ever usually being told what any of that should involve or how to do it in a way that doesn’t jeopardise the game or the concept. This talk aims to give developers all the tools and knowledge they need to be confident in auditioning, working with and directing actors for video games. Covering topics such as budgets, casting, what makes a good audition, the needs of an actor and the difference between good and bad direction.</P>
<P><EM>Jay Britton is an award-winning voiceover who has worked across nearly every VO medium there is including TV, radio, video games, audiobooks and commercials. Jay's primary focus lies in video game character acting. With 200 roles across 50 titles, Jay is a prolific video game actor. Jay is best known for his work in both AAA and indie titles such as Divinity: Original Sin 2, Total War: Warhammer 2, Planet Coaster, The Turing Test, Elite Dangerous and Augmented Empire. In 2014, Jay was the recipient of 2 Voice Arts Awards for his work in animation and video games, and in 2017 he received a Bronze Lion in Cannes.</EM></P>

<P>Bex is a client-side developer at Hutch in Shoreditch, and has been helping them make racing games for a year and a half so far. She's worked on Hot Wheels: Race Off, which was nominated for four TIGA awards, and has spent the last few months working on an exciting soon-to-be-released project. She's also been an ambassador for Women In Games for about a year. She spends most of her free time playing board games, trying to find all the Korok seeds in Breath of the Wild, scrolling down Twitter, or officiating roller derby, and has just discovered that she really doesn't like writing about herself in the third person.</P>

<P><SPAN>This talk is about how to contact streamers and what makes a game more attractive for streamers to play.</SPAN></P>
<P><EM>Jupiter is a YouTuber and games journalist who primarily plays indie game. She plays through thousands of games on her YouTube channel each year, checking out a plethora of different types of games.</EM></P>

<P CLASS="MsoNormal"><I><SPAN>As Head of Certification, Anna works closely with key stakeholders in government and across the Creative Sector industries to provide advice and guidance on the application processes for all of the cultural tests, co-production treaties and policies relating to all of the Creative Sector tax reliefs for film, High-end, Animation Television, Children’s Television and Video Games. She has an extensive knowledge of all the creative sector tax reliefs, cultural tests and co-production treaties and has been instrumental in assisting government with the legislation and policy relating to the releifs. Anna regularly speaks on panels at conferences and events to promote the tax reliefs such as the Children’s Media Conference, Glasgow Film Festival, Develop and many others. In addition Anna has organised BFI led seminars and events for the Animation, Video games and Children’s Television Sectors.</SPAN></I></P>
<P CLASS="MsoNormal"><I><SPAN>Anna was also involved with devising the BFI’s Diversity Standards which apply to lottery funded projects supported by the BFI and are assessed by the BFI Certification Unit and she provides secretariat support for the BFI Diversity Steering Group. <P>This talk presents a toolbox of simple, practical, everyday programming practices you can use to make your code easier to understand, more robust, easier to re-use &maintain, and easier to port to other platforms. The practices are largely programming language agnostic and are equally applicable whether you use Unity, Unreal, or your own engine you crazy, crazy person.</P>
<P><EM>Alex is a mostly hairless ape-descended carbon based life form from the planet Earth, who lives in Leamington Spa with his wife and son; their happy dog, and a large collection of video games, LEGO, and skateboards. </EM><EM>He has been making games professionally since 1996 as both a programmer and a designer, and these days he runs independent micro studio darbotron ltd. whichspecialises in console porting and technical consultancy. Alex has worked on 16 published multi-platform titles to date, was a co-founder of FreeStyleGames, co-creator of the DJ Hero franchise, and is a member of BAFTA.</EM></P>
