Livingmaps and the Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies (University of Warwick) invite you to join us for a workshop about inclusive map design.

If you are interested in maps and ever thought that maps are not inclusive enough and might not be working for everyone, this is your opportunity to help design and create alternative, maps that are designed to meet everyone’s needs.

What can participants expect?

You will join a small team to employ fun, creative, hands-on methods to uncover and map the lived experiences of group members. Ideas from this mapping activity are then brought together to create a brief for designing a new, more inclusive approach to map making and map design for the next workshop in the series.

You do not need any map making skills, nor do you need to bring any equipment. We are simply looking for you to come prepared to share your views and perspectives on the world around you and how maps can better represent the needs of your community or group

The workshop is free and open to all, but we would particularly welcome anyone who belong to one or more of these groups:

  • Underrepresented people such as women, and those from ethnic minority, disabled and the LBTGQ+ communities who feel that current maps do not sufficiently address their needs.
  • Activists, Researchers, or people sensitive to equality and diversity issues and inequalities
We will particularly welcome people interested in issues related to gender, race or queer topics).
  • Map enthusiasts, Data visualization enthusiasts and OpenStreetMap users with a keen interest in equality and diversity issues.

The workshop is part of a workshop series from the ‘Can Digital Goods be Neutral?’ project, funded by ESRC Digital Good Research Fund. For more information, click here. Participants will be asked to sign a consent form upon arrival, for their contributions to be used as part of the project. Participant information can be found here.

A free lunch will be provided!
