Innovating Future Business looks at the future of business and innovation from two distinct angles. 8.30 - 12.30 is 90 Minutes to 90 Seconds: the future of sports content consumption. Lunch will be 12.30 - 13.30 and we will then move on to the finals of our Innovating Future Business Competition 13.30 - 5.00. We hope that you will attend both the morning and afternoon events, but each can be registered seperately. More information about each event can be found below.
90 Minutes to 90 Seconds: the future of sports content consumption ~ 8.30-12.30
Keynote speaker: Simon Green, Head of BT Sport
During the early stages of this season's English Premier League (EPL), several reports noted that audiences for games broadcast on satellite television had started to decline. Naturally, this was of concern to the various stakeholders, not least the broadcasters that had just paid record feews to secure EPL rights. Recently, Sky's six-months results highlighted a fall in viewing figures. At the same time in the United States, commentators were making similar observations about the National Football League. While some speculated that the presidential election was distracting people, many others highlighted the changing consumption habits of television viewers, in particular millennials.
Sport broadcasting maybe standing on the cusp of profund change, with new generations of viewers more likely to be accessing ninety second clips of games on YouTube or second screening and live streaming to a smartphone than sitting and watching a game on television for ninety minutes. Moreover, with the use of mobile devices now obiquitous, and the emergence of platforms such as Periscope which enables 90 seconds and/or 90 minutes, the when and where people watch sport has changed massively and will continue to do so.
Against this backdrop, the latest Centre for Sport Business Management (CSB) workshop will be considering what the future is for sports broadcasting. Leading industry speakers, as well as memebers of the CSB's own research team, will be assessing changes in consumption, developments in technology, and key issues across the broadcast landscape.
Innovating Future Business Competition ~ 13:30 - 17:00
Building on the success of our previous innovation competitions, we are excited to run our latest Innovation competition featuring student teams from Alliance Universities pitching to five investors. The competition encourages innovative, forward-thinking business ideas and is open to current students and graduates of the University of Salford, as well as students and graduates from University Alliance.
This competition will include multiple investors and Universities in a true Dragons Den Style. The prize pool is £5000, but there is also a chance for further investment.
The competition fis or students and graduates of Alliance universities, in collaboration with The University of Salford, Cariocca Enterprises , Marketing Signals, Wakelet and ANS Group, Web Applications UK.
The investors are looking for proposals that demonstrate a viable business with a low cost of entry, evidence of sound market research, and crucially an innovative idea with the ‘wow’ factor.

Professor of Management Studies
Director of the Centre for Sports Business at University of Salford
Chris is an expert in football business and finance and has authored several books on the subjects, including Rules of the Game, End of the Road, and the best-selling, The 90 Minute Manager. His most recent books are The Extra Mile, which deals with employee engagement, Intelligent M&A, an analysis of the intelligence function within the M&A process and Quiet Leadership (written in partnership with Carlo Ancelotti). His current research interests focus on all aspects of the business of sport. Chris is a regular contributor to BBC TV News, Sky Business News, Radio 5; he is also an occasional contributor to BBC Newsnight and a variety of other news media outlets. Chris is an independent commissioner of the FA’s Football Regulatory Authority.
Professor of Science Communication & Future Media at University of Salford
Award winning science communicator, frequent keynote, published 100+ articles and 7 books, the most recent of which is Sport 2.0: Transforming Sports for a Digital World, where he examines not only how it affects our participation in sport but also how it changes our experience of life online. Andy looks at the Olympic Games as an exemplar of digital innovation in sports, and offers a detailed look at the social media footprint of the 2012 London Games, discussing how organizers, sponsors, media, and activists responded to the world's largest media event. Ultimately, Andy offers a road map for how sports will become mixed-reality experiences and abandon the duality of physical and digital. Andy will present his ideas in an interactive presentation.
Professor in Sport Enterprise
Among his research and consultancy activities, Simon has worked with numerous organisations involved in sport including Chelsea FC (social media), Adidas (strategy and football), Mastercard (sponsorship), FC Barcelona (overseas fan engagement), the International Tennis Federation (brands and logos), Atletico Madrid (education programme development), and many others.
Chadwick has also helped UEFA create its Certificate and Diploma programmes in Football Management, together with a Marketing guide which is being used by the organisation’s 54 member associations.
His views on sport are regularly covered by the media; he has been identified by The Huffington Post as being one of the top-30 most influential sport marketers in the world, by The Independent newspaper as being one of the top-10 business tweeters in the UK (@Prof_Chadwick), and by The Times as being the ‘guru’ of sport management in Britain.
Professor of Cultural Sociology, Salford University
Garry's research and teaching focuses on audiences, consumers, digital media/technologies, fans, sport and gamers. He is the author of the books Video Gamers (2012) and Consuming Sport (2004), and the co-author of Introducing Cultural Studies (2nd ed. 2008), The Sage Dictionary of Leisure Studies (2009), and co-editor of Online Gaming in Context (2011).
Founder and managing director of live brand experience and events’ agency, Wolfe
Laura Wolfe is a businesswoman, a charity supporter, proud mum of two boys, as well as being a passionate Manchester City fan. In June of 2012, Laura bought the rights to the Northwest Football Awards and has built one of the most respected and well attended footballing awards ceremony in the UK, broadcasted on BBC Radio Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside (where she is a regular speaker), as well as being covered in the national press including, The Guardian, The Sun, The Daily Star, The Daily Mail and across regional TV and media. Laura is often asked to contribute to panel sessions on business, marketing, events and charity. She is also an ambassador for the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, the Diane Modahl Sports Foundation and a founder trustee of A Smile for Orly.
Alexandra is a multi-award winning Online Campaign Manager for MEC Global working on new business and innovation opportunities across the industry.
Formerly BBC Sport Journalist and Production coordinator for @OffsideRulePod. Alexandra won European Search Awards 2016, Young Search Professional and is part of the Media Week 30 Under 30 list.
Executive chair of the Youth Charter
Geoff Thompson is a leading youth activist and expert in sports development and politics with over 25 years experience in the bidding and hosting and legacy of major games and the positive impact of sport, arts, culture and digital technology in the social and human development of young people and communities globally. He is Founder and Executive Chair of the Youth Charter (www.youthcharter.co.uk), a UK registered charity and UN NGO. Geoff is a former five times World Karate Champion and was honoured in 1995 with an M.B.E. for his services to sport. Geoff is also a Deputy Lieutenant for Greater Manchester.

Chairperson Cariocca Enterprises
Cleve was born and educated in Guyana, South America. He came to the UK in 1969 to work in the electronic industry and by 1976 he had been headhunted Siemens Ltd, assuming overall responsibility at the Data & Communications Service Group. By 1980 Cleve had become Head of Power Engineering Service at Congleton in Cheshire. Later, Cleve chose to concentrate on his own business as a Partner in the financial services company Openwork. Before accepting the role as Chair of Cariocca Enterprises, Cleve was Chair of Cariocca’s sister Company the Positive Action Cariocca Training (PACT). Cleve was also Chair of City College Manchester for 8 years taking them from LEA control into independence.
Nadia Fortune-Nesbit - Cariocca Enterprises
Nadia oversees the day-to-day running of Cariocca, ensuring that it can fulfill its role in helping the city's entrepreneurs flourish and achieve success in their businesses. She says that the favourite part of her job is knowing that Cariocca has helped a new business take its first step, perhaps also helping its owners overcome some of the hurdles in setting up their new venture. Having been self-employed previously, Nadia knows first-hand just how difficult it can be to continue to be motivated and achieve goals. But she also knows the great feeling of having achieved those goals, whether it be winning your first client or making your first sale. When she’s not at work, Nadia enjoys photography and travel.

Gareth graduated in 2006 from MMU Business School after finishing top of his year in e-Business. Straight from University, Gareth started his own digital marketing agency from which Marketing Signals has grown.A businessperson with a technical mind, he conveys comprehensive digital marketing knowledge in a straightforward and easily understandable way. A respected and in demand speaker, Gareth regularly speaks at industry events around the world sharing his knowledge.

Justyna Turner has been directly involved in creative business start–ups as well as working with established businesses to strengthen and develop their business model and marketing strategies both in England and in Canada over the last 10 years. Through her role as an Enterprise Champion at the University of Salford she has been involved in creating and leading several initiatives, such as the Tech Angels Business Competition and more recently, she is part of the team who created Innovating Future Business Competition. Currently she is involved in supporting young entrepreneurs and business societies at the University of Salford, through business mentoring, helping in development of student’s business plans, as well as organising and delivering various training events. As a qualified business advisor, she aims to develop students' entrepreneurial mind-set and assists them if they decide to start a business, by giving bespoke advice and delivering workshops on marketing, business planning, freelancing, social media, networking and creating a perfect pitch.

Craig Dean is Chief Executive of the Web Applications Group, President of the Oldham Chamber of Commerce, Director of Oasis Community Learning, a Microsoft Certified Professional Developer and Technical Trainer, and a gifted entrepreneur. Craig is committed to expanding the growth of the tech sector in the North – this ambition is exemplified by the formation of WA:UK Tech Angels, an angel investor with a difference. More importantly, he is a dedicated mentor to many talented young software engineers.
Founder & CEO at Wakelet
Former Airbus tech lead Jamil Khalil is the brainchild behind Manchester-based content sharing web platform Wakelet, which enables users to organise any content on the internet. Jamil has received investment from a number of high-profile investors, including Chillingo founders Chris Byatte and Joe Wee, a platform which specialised in publishing games by independent developers on mobile platforms, including Angry Birds.
Scott Fletcher is one of the UK’s leading entrepreneurs and was recently awarded an MBE for services to business and the community in the North West of England.
When he was just 22 years old, he founded what is now his largest business, ANS, which has grown to become a leading Cloud Services Provider in the UK, with nearly 300 employees and a £60m turnover. Scott is a widely known figure in the Manchester community thanks to his active charitable involvement, passion for Apprenticeships and his participation on the Greater Manchester LEP. His outspoken views on politics, IT and business have made him a respected voice in the media and somebody who isn’t afraid to challenge the status quo.
